You can right click it in the task bar and choose 'disable' (I believe that's the term it uses).

I would just remove the program from your computer
Only if....
You never visit porn sites, never open unsolicited mail, as most email providers already have protected delivery systems. Acknowledge if you accidentally open spam, that a good non intrusive free spyware from Yahoo will save you from some embarrassment.
being a smart computer user, you'll never require the use of virus busters.
A good firewall, and if you use Windows SP2, then that firewall is good, and is used under licence.

You can but it is not recommended, if you right click on the icon on the bottom right (near the time) it will open the Norton Antivirus control panel, there you can turn it off. Note, if you do this, your computer will NO LONGER BE PROTECTED from viruses and spyware.

It depends on if you mean "disable" or completely stop it from bothering you forever.
Right clicking on the notify icon in the task bar will allow you to disable it until restart, or for a certain amount of time. If you want it to stop bugging you forever, you will most likely have to uninstall it.

turning off auto-protect option is same as turning off norton.
Beware, if you are doing it for installing a new software, this might harm your pc very badly.
