I keep reading comments that say things like "God is a fairy tale," "you must be retarded if you believe," "xxxxx religion is a cult." Some people make comments about things they don't know anything about and call it fact. Sometimes it is really hurtful!

Do they really believe this garbage or are they just trying to be nasty?

I guess what really bothers me is the personal attacks. Ture, these insult go on in every area. Yes, I am very opinionate and I get passionate in regards to certain areas (as my name implies).

However, why attack people? Does it make you feel better?

When I commented that people say things and they don't know what they are talking about, that happen a lot here. For example, many people have a lot of strange ideas about my church.

(I'm probably going to get blasted for this) I am a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I get upset when people call something that is SACRED to me "magic underware." We are not a cult. We are Christians and we only have one spouse. What is the purpose of being disrespectful of a persons beliefs?

I think I would know what my religion teaches much more that one of these individuals. They have free speech so they can say whatever they want. However, they say these nasty thing like they are facts but THEY ARE WRONG.

I think that people are rude because they can and it gets them noticed. I have experianced alot of unessecary rudeness too. Just because you have an opinion about something does not make it right! Tons of people call my faith stupid... and other things I don't call their beliefs stupid ! Lets be nice and disagree.
Would you like your religion called a "fairytale" or unbelievable? I wouldnt, it's the golden rule guys. I always say my opinion but I dont cuss at people or make them feel dumb.

I think they believe it, therefore they are nasty about it. They, unlike the racists here sound sincere, sadly.

It is unfortunate that people chose to be insulting in the ways you described. I am not a particularly religious person but I try to respect everyone's right to their beliefs and I think all religion has value. Just from personal experience, what has turned me off from organized religion is some of the people I've met. I've been preached to by people who cheat on their spouses, treat their kids like crap, cheat on their taxes etc. but think they're better than I am because they go to church every Sunday. I was raised Catholic and have had people tell me that it's a cult, Satan's church, and that all Catholics are alcoholics in an attempt to get me to convert to their religion. I've met people who tell me all about what good Christians they are and then they start spouting a bunch of homophobic, sexist, racist garbage. I have also met Christians who see "Satan" worship in the most innocent things. My aunt described incense burners as being a form of devil worship. I've also had people condemn me for letting my son celebrate Halloween (aka Satan's holiday) while they take their kids to "Harvest parties" where they dress in costumes, eat candy, and bob for apples. Basically, I've had to deal with a lot of so called "Christians" who talk the talk but definitely don't walk the walk, so to speak. Many of them are very judgemental and hypocritical. It's definitely pushed me away from the Church. So coming from this point of view, you can see why some people are very negative about Christianity. It can be hard to separate Christians as a whole group from the bad examples who always seem to be the most vocal which is why you get nasty responses. Sometimes people are just trolling around the site to be nasty too.

hi, in case you would be an atheist and decide for to supply Christians a run for his or her funds, you're able to study the Bible and learn the historic past of the classic international and center a while. As an analogy, wide-unfold Patton defeated wide-unfold Rommel in tank battles in WWII because of the fact Patton studied Rommel's books on militia and tank conflict interior the 1930's. Those of us who say that the Bible is merely fairy tales really do believe that the Bible is fictional. It is not said to be hurtful, it is our belief.

I do agree that it is hurtful to call someone names like "retarded" for believing in something. I am atheist but recognize that your beliefs are just as valid as mine, even if I disagree with them and think they are false.

I wouldn't say though that people who say those things don't know what they are talking about because most of them do.

Try to remember that religion is one of the most touchy subjects you could possibly discuss with another person and it is normal for the discussion to get heated.

First off, people are nasty and insulting, so why be any different here?

Secondly - I'm sure many do believe what they're saying. I personally agree that religions in general are silly, but I try to put myself in your shoes... and I'm sure you find your faith a very real part of your life... thus I try to refrain from 'nastiness'

Well....your first example "God is a fairy tale" is not meant to be an insult, the person is simply stating what they believe. What's wrong with that?

The fact of the matter is a lot of people who post answers are very opinionated. When opinionated people say what they believe they tend to be very adamant about it. But when religion get's involved that adamancy often turns into a form of zeal, anger, annoyance...etc. These topics are touchy for a lot of people and for other people they are stupid these clashes tend to lead to bitter feelings and insults. It's just a clashing of different principals, spiritualities and beliefs. It is better to argue and insult then to start crusades or jihads. Please keep that in mind.

I am one who is not religious, but i dont put down anyones beliefs. Just dont take it personal. its just one of these issues where no one will ever be content with other peoples religions. I know that none of us like to hear an opinion that is different from our own. We just have to face the fact that there will always be diversity. Just like we dont understand why people are pro-illegal.

You state that "Some people make comments about things they don't know anything about and call it fact."

Don't you realize to a non-believer that this is exactly what you are doing?

I'm sorry if it's hurtful to you, but imagine living in a country where rejecting the dominant religion makes you a pariah, and the religionists tell you that you're going to hell. That's just plain sick.

I believe we are all here for a reason. There are some who want to help, some who want to learn, and some to test us.

The peope here with maybe "not so nice" comments are testing your faith, strength, but also testing your acceptance and tolerance for those with a different opinion. Do not argue, accept them the way they are. Be polite, and friendly while trying to be "genuine" to yourself.
