Siem Reap and the Angkor complex are not places to go if you want to be alone. The place has tourists everywhere.

If you want to see a really amazing temple complex (or rather, ruins of such), then visit Pagan in Myanmar. You're likely to almost be the only tourist there. You can rent a bicycle and go around totally undisturbed -- no hassles from locals peddling "souvenirs".

Angkor Wat is wonderful and not just one site. You can get away from the tourists by visiting any of the hundreds of temples that are not the tourist norm.
Depending on where you are in Cambodia the prices vary from similar to Thailand to a little higher. I have found very inexpensive lodging in Phnom Phen and prices to be somewhat higher in Siem Reap. Probably because of the popularity of Angkor Wat.
Remember everything, and I mean everything is for sale in Cambodia. Most of the serious grifters in the world end up there at some point in time so hold tight to your wallet.
Keep a small amount of local currency in one pocket and the bulk of your pocket money in the other. If stopped by one of the three police agency's pull out the small denomination cash when they want the bribe and you might even be able to argue them down a little. If you pull out the big bucks it’s gone. I have a friend who takes a book everywhere he goes. If he gets stopped by the cops he just sits down and pulls out the book and starts reading. Waits them out! He usually gets off Scot free. Don't ever run or try to dodge the military police. They would just as soon shoot you as look at you. You are safer to hire a driver than renting a bike. Just trust me on this. It’s worth it. I have more if you need it and check out this site for some inside expat info.

It's true, there are a lot of tourists in the Angkor Wat area, but it's still an awesome place to visit. I went there (alone) 2 years ago, and it was certainly a life-changing experience.

Good luck

10$ (USD or SIN, up to you) will hire a English speaking ex-boxer with a motorcycle and he will show you around town. Take care of him and he will take care of you. Maybe hire 2 drivers, 1 to drive you around and 1 to keep the beggars off your back. Give yourself about 3 days to see all their is to see.
