This applies to things like a job, cars, houses, mates, etc.

For the question I did not mean to say, "and only go for the things you can get?" I meant to say "Is it generally a waste of time to want what you can't get. And should you instead only focus on or go for the things you can get?"

Unless you're waiting for a trailer from FEMA or your home and family were swept away by a hurricane, you really don't have it that bad. Try bucking up and counting your blessings, you're luckier than thousands and thousands of people all over the world. If 2nd best is good enough for you, that's great. If you think that all there is to life is expensive objects, that's great. If you can't get your thoughts together to ask a question so that you can get responses you are looking for, take a moment to sit back in your chair and think. Think about how many people would love to have their only worries being what car to buy or which job to have, or what size house to have.

It depends on what you mean by 'can't'. For the truly impossible, of course. You can waste a lot of valuable time, money and other resources-to end up just where you started, or worse off.

But, if it's a job that you'll truly enjoy and benefit from, a car that would truly be an advantage to own, the security of owning your own home...it depends on how much you're willing to postpone, invest, and work for! And, yes sometimes take risks!

For example, if you want to go into a profession that requires a lot of education and licenses, you may have to put up more money than you're prepared to. But, before you do so, there are standardized tests, that can help you separate the desire for status, and real desire to work in that field. If you must stretch your resources,or even borrow money, you should really make sure.

If you want a better car or home, you should measure how much you want it, against how much you'd have to risk, or postpone. You might need to take a second job, put off some recreational activities, or even plans for marriage or relationships.

Thee is much that is in the realm pf possibility-it just may take more time, effort, and/or postponement of other things, than you're willing to invest.

But, if you find something that you really want, and it can be gotten for a price-a high one, but not an impossible one-you should consider going for it! It may become your life's regret, if you don't try for it.

If you didn't have hopes and dreams what would you have? Never settle for second best; for long any way; I'll say it once and I'll say it again; prosperity won't (well for most of us) just sit it's self in your lap one day and say, okay buddy, what can i get for you? First of all lets get realistic; you want to rule the world...okay, not going to happen...but say you want that amazing new car or house; or even the job of your dreams; for those who lack the (what I like to call "birth rite" to such things) these things are attainable. All it takes is motivation, ambition, and action. Fate doesn't help those who don't help them selves. Instead of watching TV for 5 or 6 hours a day, go to school; there are so many online colleges now its almost nauseating; so having to stay home with the kids isn't an excuse. Join the Army...education and child care benifits out the ****...they will freakin pay for you to get a PhD...if you so desire. Learn how to budget your damned income...if you spend a couple hundred or even a couple grand on partying every month (or week if you really got problems;) that sweet ride is just a flicker in the distance. If you have spent every last drop of energy and life you've got at a great company and are continually getting passed over for advancement (and lack the conscience to black mail your boss) find a new job...biggest problem in this country is people get so caught up in their over convenient little bubbles, they forget there is a whole freakin world of possibilities out there.

How do you really know what you "can't" get? You may only can't get it at the time, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Remember you can turn your dreams into goals and then focus on your goals to make them a reality.

I have been self-employed now for over 15 years - I run my own karaoke/dj system, video production studio, artist, musician, martial artist.

Don't let others discourage you... if you want something bad enough - you can make it happen.

YES! Because you will end up spending your money on things you don't want when you could be saving up for the thing you want. Sadly, that is the way of life for many people-out with the old and in with the new. Nothing ever seems to last anymore.

The words that stood out are "only go for the things you can get". Those are "limiting" thoughts. Change your thoughts, you change your life. Start out dreaming for what you want then do the necessary steps to get there! No one will help you, no one will usually agree with you. They don't have to. Those dreams belong to you. Do what you know you should do to start making your dreams come true.

I'm not sure there are things we cannot get. I guess it depends on the situation, but usually we can get what we want. I just set small goals which lead to the success of bigger goals. This seems to work most of the time.
Peace

It is called striving and it is frustrating work. But, your goal is a worthy one if it exceeds your grasp. You just need help to attain it. May you get the help you need. I'll be pulling for you.
Peace and mastery is in wanting what we already have. I've been working on that mindset. C. :)!!

Yes. I've wanted a close friendship with certain person before but due to complex situations that is impossible and for me to continue to strive for the relationship is RIDICULOUS. But I still long for it deep down, it's depressing.
