i have a humidor which i use to store and age cigars. I moved recently and the humidor went unused for a while (1 year). the humidifier inside was obviously doing its job, in an empty humidor, before it dried out. now it is just sitting waiting for me to set it up again to use. My question is, do i need a new humidifier or can i just soak it and do the whole set up process with establishing a constant steady humidity level for a week before adding cigars. or have i ruined the entire unit. it looks fine to me and obviously when new humidors are in storage, they are not being used.

Your humidor and humidifying element will be fine, you will just need to re-prime it. The only chance that you may have negatively affected the humidor is if you have stored it in an area with excessively high or highly fluctuating temperatures. This can damage the oils which are in the cedar, and cause the cigars to develop an off flavor and aroma. Outside of that, though, you should be fine.

In addition to the suggestions above, purchase a humidifying gel and add it to your humidor. I find that I do not even need to use the humidifier if I have a small container of this gel, it regulate sthe humidity to 70%, give or take. You can purhcase them at any cigar store and they are relatively inexpensive, ($5-$10). Prior to setting up the humidor, make sure you go through it and wipe the entire inside with a cloth soaked in distilled water, allow to dry and repeat. This should get rid of most of dust/dirt from sitting and should help restore the spanish cedar. Regulate the humdity with the gel for a few days to make sure the humidity holds and you should be fine. Good luck.

I would do the initial set up again and just check it for a week before storing cigars in it. Check your humidity levels and temp. We will go months without using ours then get the urge for a good cigar...no where to buy good ones where we live so we have to go an hour away or order online and get several at a time. Always works great for us.

Start it up and monitor the conditions as often as possible and at least daily for at least a week or two and then you will be able to determine if the humidor is working on a consistent basis.
