My firm is going under - this is common knowledge, and everyone here knows it. My boss knows I know.

How do I tell him I am looking for another job? How do I ask him (realistically) how long I have before the end? I want to be polite and kind, as my boss is very nice, and I like him as a person. I don't want to cause any rudeness or drama, but I must look out for #1.

How do I bring this up? Do I ask for a letter of reference? How?

Basically you just have to suck it up and ask.

I would sit down with him and say I was looking to further my career and have been looking into employment with other organizations. Would he be willing to serve as a reference? How long could I expect my current employment situation to be stable?

I've never been in a situation like this so I'm going to try and help. I wouldn't tell me boss unless I had a solid offer some where else that I was excited about taking. Then I'd give him a 30 day notice if I could and the other employer was willing to wait. I wouldn't do a letter of reference because I'm assuming it'd be just as effective as them doing a background check on me and checking out my previous employers. hope i helped.

I would just tell him that, while you have enjoyed your time there, you don't feel the potential for career growth is there. Politely tell him that you feel it's in your best interest to find another job, and let him know that you'd appreciate a letter of recommendation should the need arise.

he is a nice boss and you sound like a nice employee, he will understand. Just do and ask what you think is reasonable.

You don't need to tell him anything until you find another job.
