Open borders? You are joking I hope. Our country would collapse under the strain of millions of people flocking here. Who would support them all? There surely wouldn't be enough jobs for everyone which means more would rely on social services. Our water and food supplies would run low. We can't just take in everyone that wants to come here.
We already have an influx of culture,we sure don't need more. It is already difficult enough to communicate with those who do not speak our language. Crime would increase when those here would have no means of supporting themselves and would then turn to crime in order to survive.
The idea of open borders would be the end of this great country of ours.

Open border policy will work well only if the economic situation of open border countries are same or similar take for example the European Union. why do you think they are taking a long time accepting poorer eastern european countries?
What happened to France? There was a lot of Polish workers who came in and flooded the market with cheap labor. Now if people come in and spend the money that they earn here atleast a little bit it makes sense but they send it back home.
Mexico's highest revenue maker is money coming from USA from their families. The families pay taxes to Mexican government not to the American Government.
See you cannot tax illegal immigrants. Its not the question of American workers losing job alone. they get Social security and go back to their country and still get it. America could have done that when it was extremely rich and had no debts but now American has over 9 trillion dollars in debts. Thats the reason.

They come here and pop out babies, which our government calls U.S. citizens. These anchor babies are given government assistance because the families cannot or will not support their own children. Open borders would put a greater strain on not only our financial resources, but our food, housing, and educational systems. Let them stay where they are and keep popping out those kids. Let their own government educate the kids. Make the family work to support the kid. We want nothing to do with illegals because they are here ILLEGALLY. Open borders would also allow other terrorists to enter our country through Mexico and Canada. Do you want another 9/11? Do you really want anyone and everyone coming here and taking your job, your home, your child's place in the classroom? Do you know how much money is spent on E.S.L. classes for illegals every year? Give me a break. Close the borders, now!!

It's a lot of things that goes into why some are against illegal immigrants. For me, its the legal ramification. I see it being dangerous when we tolerate violating our laws. Its a slipery slope. When we tolerate violating this law, then we start tolerating other violations. The bill demonstrates this. It states that we are willing to accept illegal immigrants that has felonies. If we allow this batch of illegal immigrants in, it would give a signal for others to come. If we don't control our borders, we would have the same situation as France. The Unemployment rate would increase, racial tension would build, then a riot would erupt. As for Taxes, no matter how you could it, the illegal immigrants would not be able to pay enough taxes to self support themselves. The middle class pay for most of the benefits the poor recieve. The poor never carried their own weight in taxes. Not only illegal immigrants are poor and cost the middle class in tax dollars, but they would cost us more than the average poor. They have increase medical needs, and they would cost more in education, and translators and other miscellaneous cost. As for a lost of cultural heritage, its only a minor concern, because I do see some assimilating. They are slower than other ethnic groups to do so, and thats part of the problem. The large numbers they arrive here, allow them to resist assimilating. The problem I see is its disruptive to our economy. Even though, Hispanic small business has grown tremendously, it comes at a cost of other small business. Some of the other small business are just mom and pop stores, and can not handle the change in demographics. They are often too small to hire those who can speak spanish. Even if they learn how to speak spanish, they would not fully understand Hispanic culture. The hispanic business would grow larger than American ones, because they have the Hispanic customers and some of the non-hispanics. The greater size of the hispanics business would allow them to cut cost and drive the Non-hispanic business into bankruptcy. Previous immigration prevented this, by having a more balance immigration, where several immigrant groups would enter America. This is one of the reason African AMerican small business is failing. I wouldn't mind so much of them staying, since the majority of damage they did to this country has been done already, If there was a fool proof way to prevent other illegal immigrants from arriving. I would like them to pay a large penalty. $5,000 is small compared to how much it cost some of them to enter the US. I would like to see some of the money from the penalties pay to help small business make a transition in the changing demographics.

First, it's a matter of rewarding a crime (illegal immigration) with a prize (citizenship).
Second, turning illegal immigrants into citizens will not necessarily put them in the "legal" work force. There are american citizens who work off the books too.
Third, that won't guarantee that they will pay their taxes.
Forth, even if they work legally and pay taxes, that wouldn't have a positive impact in our economy, since they send most of their money to their families back in whatever country they're from.
Fifth, since they live with minimal resources (otherwise they wouldn't be able to send their money to family), it is more likely that they will be involved with drugs, alcohol and petty crimes.
Sixth, many illegal immigrants abuse our welfare system, which can put a dent in our economy.
Seventh, they don't have interest in making this country better. They have no idea of how this country was built and how pride and hard work are what keep this a great country.
This whole thing is very complex. I'm sure there are immigrants that don't fit all those points, but those are just a few of the aspects involved.
By the way, I am a legal immigrant, I pay my taxes, I obey the law, and I am very proud of living in this great country.

Illegal immigrants have broken the law once; how many of them will break the law again?
If the President grants amnesty to illegals coming across the border or overstaying on tourist visas then certainly people applying for visa and petitions legally should be granted wishes to remain in the U.S. Where does that leave us standing? Once some people get wind that the USA has opened the door for some illegal immigrants then it is only reasonable to assume that even more will begin arriving.
I have a strong opinion on this topic because I am a U.S. citizen who married someone on a J1 visa that entered legally. Because he had a 2 year home rule restriction we were not allowed to remain together in the U.S. even after appealing our case for two years. This caused a considerable financial strain on our relationship due attorney expenses and my husband was not allowed to work while the case was being petitioned. Although the government acknowledged that we were legally married they still denied us. I had to choose between my family, career, and home or my husband. I chose to be with him and left everything behind.
If I must leave the U.S to be with my husband then it seems only right that illegal immigrants should not be allowed to stay.
The vast majority of immigrants coming to work in the USA come on J1 visas. Should they happen to become involved in a relationship with an American citizen then it is the American citizen who will be forced to relocate out of their homeland. Afterall as the saying goes love knows no bounds and no matter what preconditions the government imposes on legal immigrants coming to USA, it is evitable that this will happen. Does this mean that my rights as American citizen are to be denied because I married an immigrant? Where is my lady with the flaming torch to show me the way after leaving behind my family, homeland, opportunity for career to face an uncertain future? From now on we hope that things will go in our favor but it is possible to imagine that we could be separated from each other indefinately.

Someone who tries to immigrate legally is a stupidy like me.
I spent over three years looking hard for a job in Canada through the internet. I studied a lot about the Country. It was very hard but I found a job approved by HRSDC, in February of this year, to work in Edmonton, Alberta.
I submitted all required documentation to the canadian consulate but the immigration officer refused my work permit. He said that I do not have strong economic ties to my country.
I tried to go legally, I did everything within the law. I had employer and place to stay. But what was the advantage of doing that legally?

although your argument does contain a degree of logic,
open borders that caused a huge influx in migrant workers
would just exaserbate the problem. The folks coming across
the border take their riches (in Mexico) back home. The
money made "under the table" -- the flood across the
builder don't have social security or any "pay in" requirements
for their paychecks so any social program that can be
acquired is pure gratis. ---- again, it IS the illegal alien
wherein lies the problem-- mostly because our Government
(City,State, Federal ) don't enforce the laws and prosecute
the employers. If this were done, the would be very few illegals.

At the moment the illegals do low paying jobs, because that is all they can get, or are able to achieve. However if the are given legal status then suddenly you have these people, allowed to go to a US college, to get better paid jobs, to move about the country legally.
So once that happens what who is going to do the low paid jobs? As I am sure they will not want to work in these jobs anymore.
There needs to be a crackdown on illegal immigration and a raise in the minimum wage, so American can do these jobs and support their family on it as well
*No Name* (the post above) is the reason more help and assistance should be given to US citizens and legal immigrants in this country, as she has tried to follow the US immigration laws to bring her husband here.

Open borders is not the answer. It would only cause more problems.
Legitimising illegals is just another way of saying "amnesty". That again is not the answer.
The issue is not just the jobs they take. The problems they bring into this country are endless. I could write a book on it.
They need to come here the right way or not come at all.
OK. So you say they want a better life...............well so do a lot of legal Americans. There are legal Americans who fight day to day to make ends meet and do without health care, proper food, and education. Illegals are not unique to this problems in life.
