Contact the photography department at the UNT College of Visual Arts. Ask them to either refer you to a graduate student or see if you can put a notice on one of our boards. Photography majors go through very extensive classes and portfolio reviews and the SOVA has a reputation as one of the best in the Southern US.

Think about what style you really want. If you want artistic you hire an artist, if you want photojournalism you find a guy on newspaper staff to do it.

ABSOLUTELY UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO WILL NOT LET YOU KEEP YOUR NEGATIVES AND/OR HIGH RESOLUTION PROOFS! This is where most brides get screwed...badly. They think they are getting a great deal because he only charged $200 to take the pics or something. Then when you want pictures, new copies, whatever...you end up paying $70 a sheet for them.

What we did with our guy was we made a deal with him. He takes engagement pictures to show us what he can really do. If we like those, we hire him to do the wedding. I disagree with above poster...just because you pay more doesn't mean it's better quality. Quite the opposite actually. Usually the $1500 for 40 photo guys are the scam artists and not the pros.

Craigslist and theknot are the traditional online sources for cheap photographers.

Beware, your pictures are the only lasting thing from your wedding day. You might luck up and get a good photographer who is just starting out doing weddings and needs a portfolio. You might get a cheap photographer who delivers snapshots that Aunt Edith could have taken. Cheap and good rarely go hand in hand. So many people just got a digital SLR and believe that makes them good photographers instantly. In reality, this is not so. Yeah, you might get 1000 pictures, but I would rather have quality than quantity.

You might try the local college arts department to see if a student would like to shoot for free or cost for the experience. Ask at your local photo lab. Often they know who does wedding photography on the side, and they may know of someone with talent who does not advertise.

If the images of the day are important to you, I would hire an established professional and pay the cost. I think you will, in the end, consider it money well spent.

No matter who you choose, ask to see their work beforehand. Meet with them and make sure you click on a personal level. Discuss your expectations and their ability to deliver.

Good luck and best wishes, I hope your pictures turn out good.

I recently came across a freelance site where you put out an inquiry for bids and others bid on the project. If you can't find one through the phone-book or word of mouth, you could try that. Get references, check portfolios, negotiate payment schedules and milestones well in advance. I just hired an artist in the DFW area....and I'm really pleased with the progress.
The site I used is iFreelance.com. Describe what you want, a range you are willing to pay, and SPECIFY that they must work in DFW. You might get a couple of bids, and you might get 90! I was overwhelmed with the responses, but I also wasn't limited by geography.
Good luck and congratulations on the coming union.

I just hired (recently) a photographer for my October '07 wedding. Her pictures are great. She can take your pictures and do alot of color enhancements (example: make you black and white and accent your flowers in color). She is very reasonable in price (lot cheaper than MOST photographers out there)

You can email me at bethi1978@yahoo.com for more information.

plenty relies upon on once you're having your image taken. If this is the time of year while quite a number of flowers are in bloom, this is not ordinary to triumph over the fortress nicely worth Botanic Gardens on college highway. there are diverse spots there with categories of flowers/trees/timber, etc., that make staggering backdrops for a image. yet.........if no longer something it blooming, i could persist with shape in Dallas!
