When I'm working particularly hard at my desk for long periods of time I almost always get a stiff neck. I know this is primarily to do with my posture.
If you've ever watched a 3-year-old child sit down to watch telly, their posture is perfect. They sit with their head up, shoulders down, comfortable and relaxed. For some reason, people lose the ability to sit right by the age of 5 or 6. If we could all sit properly, there would be far less neck pain/back pain.
Just review how you sit in your working environment, it may show you some things you don't expect.

You said it was spreading to the base of your skull and making you sick.
Being checked for Meningitis would be a good Idea.
It sounds very much like you could have pinched nerves. They happen when the vertebrae in your spine shift slightly and pinch nerves. A Chiropractic adjustment would most likely solve this problem and make you feel much better.
It is a simple pain free way to solve pinched nerves or muscle spasms from spinal misalignment.
A simple method I use at home to help a headache is to stand with your back about 10 inches away from the wall. Put you head against the wall an bridge back and forth against the wall and away from the wall. This works the neck muscles and will usually (for me) help calm down a headache.
You can even press the heel of your hand against your forehead as hard as you can. Press them together with as much force as possible. This also works the neck muscles and improves the pain situation.
Good luck.

Simple things like painting the ceiling or a quick movement can spark a painful neck. If you have ever had a whiplash injury you will have a weakness in your neck.
If you start to have a tingling feeling in your shoulders, arms or hands go and see your doc it could be a disc problem.
Arcoxia is good for this type of pain but you need a script.

Try getting yourself a tempurpedic pillow. Also rub natural eucalyptis, bergamot and geranium oil with hot compress. This does wonders for my stiff necks. If it doesn't get better, you may need to see a Dr. for a muscle relaxer so it can heal. you won't need to be on them for more than a week. Just enough time for it to heal.

Could be any number of things, from a simple strain to a chronic problems. If the pain is getting worse instead of better you should see a doctor. I have chronic back and neck problems and know the pain it causes. My advice is to make a Dr. appointment and get some x-rays.

Try putting a hot towel on the aching spot or get some massage.
But if it's taking so long maybe you need to see a doctor.
