My company may transfer me to the Sacramento area from Denver. One of the things I really like about Denver is the fact it has very few bugs, and we can leave our patio door open without the worry of a swarm of mosquitos or flies ending up in the house. What is the Sacramento area like?

There are Mosquitoes but not as bad as in the south as stated, they do spray due to west Nile virus, anywhere were there is water will be worse, there are other bugs though.

Flys are everywhere but I don't think any more than anywhere else, keep garbage away from doors and sealed to cut back on them.

The biggest problem you might find is ants, the whole state is on an ant hill it seems. I was at Folsom Lake College two hours ago and just walking into class I saw millions of ants everywhere. We have them at home in Citrus Heights, at work in Davis, they are everywhere and with it as dry as its been they are out looking for water.

The higher you get into the mountains you will find other bugs like meat bees and there are gnats around also.

I was born and raised in Sacramento, still have a house in El Dorado Hills and currently live in Greenwood Village in South Denver for the last 6 years. It's about the same bug wise. Some mosquitos, flies, wasps, meat bees, spiders, ants, etc. in differing amounts depending on the area you live in just like here. The more rural, the more bugs.

Depends on the area where you are relocating and the winter of the year before.

If there was a cold winter and the rivers, lakes, streams, creeks, etc got cold enough to kill all/most of the insect eggs, then there would be lesser bugs.

So it kinda depends, my home is in Sacramento/Elk Grove, near a huge creek. Some years mosquito free, some years not so mosquito free...

Folsom Lake is a large body of water, so bugs can be more around that area, but like I said, it depends...

Mosquitos are not allowed in California. The government sprays often, whether you want it or not. There very few flies, unless you leave pet food or other attractions out. I keep my doors open, but I have screens closed.
The only places where bugs are a problem are in the North Sacramento area, along the Sacramento river, or in neighborhoods along the many creeks that flow into the Sacramento and American Rivers.

One friend of mine lives on the Arcade Creek in Sacramento and has a million frogs croaking all day and all night, but no bugs.

Sacramento has lots of insects. Lots of mosquitoes (despite the spraying), flies, wasps/yellow jackets, black widow spiders, ticks, fleas... CA is an agricultural state (especially in Sac and the central valley)...there are going to be bugs. The more rural the area, the more insect life you will encounter. It's not like you described living in Denver. That's not to say that it's like Florida (in size or volume) or any other tropical environment.

We probably have more bugs than Denver, but its definitely nothing like the bug problem in the Southern US. Of course there is always going to be a mosquito population, but vector control does a good job of trying to control it. If anything there are more wasps... especially in the Elk Grove area.

There will be flies, some mosquitos, little black ants getting in the house, and of course moths, crane flies, lacewings, and other night flyers. Lots of dragonflies.

Plenty of good places to live in Sacramento. Midtown, the north area, campus commons, Arcade, Arden, Carmichael, etc.

It all depends on where you live. If you are in suburbia, not much to worry about bugs other than flies. I lived in Florida and Nowhere can compare as for bugs.

The most important thing about living in Sacramento is finding a good place to live. Most of sacramento is a big hole...take your time and shop around for the right place to live, believe me it will be worth it! Stay away from the city, south, west, and rancho cordova...Folsom and El Dorado Hills are nicer, but the commute sucks during rush hour. Best of Luck to you!

The weather is too dry to have much of a mosquito problem.

I lived there for 8 years and the only things I saw on a regular basis were black-widow spiders.....my personal nightmare.

Basically, it is a hot and dry area. If it weren't for the Sacramento and American Rivers, it would be a desert.

I loved the weather, though. High temps with very low humidity, clear sunny skies and a cool delta breeze almost every evening. In the winter, rarely does it get cold enough for a winter coat. It is dry for six months of the year with no rain. The rainy season can be a stunner, though.

Move to midtown, but if you do, choose a place with a garage or get an alarm and a club on your car. You don't want me to tell you the stories. I have lived in north sac, south sac, and in between, and as long as I'm renting a place to live, I will never live in an area other than midtown. And by the way, I'm a 33 yo female if that helps at all :-)
