I would ignore it, personally.

These are life lessons: next time you'll be more careful on who you'll tell stuff to. How can you stop? Imagine you have the kitchen flooded because of a tap. You can close that tap, but how do you stop the water from wetting the whole floor? What's wet is wet, you just gotta first stop the tap: talk to those you know have spread the rumours. Then clean the "kitchen floor": let them tell you who they told all that to (MAKE THEM TELL U!), then talk to those. The worst part comes when you discover there was another tap open: rumours are just like water, spreading so fastly, sometimes it takes time before you can repair everything. Next time you won't leave your secrets to people who don't deserve it.

We allow gossip instead of wanting a confrontation, thinking the smart people will consider the sourse of the gossip and not believe it. If it was bad, those that know you are a good person and are your friends won't believe it anyway. The only ways to stop it after it has started is to prove them wrong or defend yourself if someone asks about it. And pray it goes away. :) People spread gossip to make themselves look important and all-knowing!

Gossip can be true as well as false. The problem is that it can still hurt people. Think about how this might effect the person being talked about. Is it something you would say in front of the person you may be talking about? Is it hurtful in nature? I think many people do it to make themselves feel important or better about themselves. The best way to stop gossip is to just say to the person when they are trying to pass it to you is to tell them out right that you have chosen not to listen to or pass gossip anymore. Just listening to it makes you a part of it. Evita

Was this rumor spread years ago? If it is not to late maybe you can tell people the truth before it is to late. Ask God for forgiveness and most of all you must forgive yourself.

Don't worry about rumor, the truth will always triumph.
Unfortunately humans like to titter, just ignore them, find conclusive proof and then present it to them.
Some still won't believe the truth, like they are religiously holding on to rumor, but ignore them.
