No matter how rude a family member is you have to let it look like you are the better person - never lash out and say something you might regret later. Remember, this is family...and like it or not, family do talk amongst each other. You never want to hear that they've spread around the family that you're the rude one. Never a good thing. Be the one who rises above the situation, just say something that stops them in their tracks and makes them think about what they just said or did that was rude, or you can just smile and walk away without saying a word. Sometimes silence is golden! =) Good luck.

Tell your spouse that they are not allowed over to your house unless they they can behave.
You don't have to go where that person is, either. See if you can get some cooperation for a head's-up if that person is going to be at a family gathering.
If you can't get that level of cooperation, and this person insists on being rude to you, then call them out on their behavior. "Look, I have tried to overlook your crappy attitude and nasty remarks... if you don't like me then fine! I don't like you either! The least you can do is shut your filthy pie-hole and try to be civil around the family! I'm not going away, so get used to it!"

there isn't much you can do, short of setting your own boundaries and limits with them.
ignore them if they are rude.... don't react or comment.... you don't have to spend a lot of time around them, do you?
if you don't know anything about it, do a web search on SETTING PERSONAL BOUNDARIES... you'll find a lot of information
take care.

laugh at them. ask them what is really meant by what they are saying, then laugh again, say i thought it didn't make any sense the first time and, i was right, it still doesn't, and then ignore them. let them feel like the jerks they are.
