Speaking from a Western Martial Artist's point of view, training blades are come in degrees.

The very best are steel blunts. Coming from a good maker, such as Albion, Pavel Moc or Darkwood, they will be as close to a live blade as can get, while cheaper ones such as Hanwei or Heinrich (sp?) tend to be off, either in terms of stiffness or weight.

Next, in my opinion, are high-quality aircraft aluminium wasters. To have the authentic weight for the sword at hand, it will create a very nice, wide edge that will cause a lot less damage on impact than a steel blade would. Also, it's easier to maintain, cheaper to replace and shares roughly 90% commonality with steel in terms of flexibility and balance.

Following are wooden wasters. Good quality ones, such as those provided by Purpleheart Armoury (www.woodenswords.com) don't come cheap, but they are durable and are reproductions of the weapons used in the earlier stages of training, or even in some tourneys.

At the very bottom of the list is foam or anything plastic or rubber (to the exception of some training daggers).

Everything thrown into one. Tends to make it more lively sometimes.
