Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. This is the primary rule of gun safety. "Safe Direction" means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off, it would not cause an injury. Whether you are shooting or simply handling a gun, never point it at yourself or others. Common sense will tell you which direction is the safest. Outdoors, it is generally safe to point the gun toward the ground, or, if you are on a shooting range, toward the target. Indoors, be mindful of the fact that a bullet can penetrate ceilings, floors, walls, windows, and doors.
Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. When handling a gun, people have a natural tendency to put their finger on the trigger. Do not touch the trigger unless the gun is pointed at the target and you are actually preparing to fire the gun.
Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. If you do not know how to check to see if a gun is unloaded, leave it alone. Carefully secure it, being certain to point it safely and to keep your finger off the trigger, and seek competent assistance.
1) Know these rules and follow them. Make others follow them too.
2) Bring ammo, or offer to contribute to the ammo costs.
3) Identify the most experienced and helpful member of the party, preferably one who has a his own gun, and ask him to "coach" you in the basics of shooting his gun.
I have found in life that if you nicely ask someone for their help or advice, they will almost always 'take you under their wing' and show you to ropes. Be sure to give them encouraging feedback and let them know they are being very helpful to you.
Good luck, be SAFE and have fun!

You should really go get some one on one with someone who knows what they're doing. Safety is the most important thing. ALWAYS assume that your firearm is loaded.... NEVER EVER point it at a person. Always keep your firearm pointed in a direction that is safe and always know the back drop of your target. The first guy to post is a dumb *** because you never pull a trigger behind your second knuckle... it's a good way to pull your shot and miss your target all together. You should pull the trigger with the pad of your index finger and you should have your arm fully extended and locked. You can steady your shooting hand with your free hand by placing the bottom of your magazine in your hand. Breathing is always important as well... you are most steady when you pause between your exhale and inhale. Take one deep breath, then a half of a breath and when you come to your natural pause thats when you squeeze off. But to be honest with you you should really get some training on how to use a handgun.

Well, if this is your first time shooting a gun, then they should not look at you as foolish. In fact you may want to mention to them if this is your first time for safety precautions. As for how you hold a gun. Follow the website and give it a read through. There is a picture toward the bottom page. Look for the sights on the gun and keep the top dot (front of the gun) in between the two dots (back of the gun). Squeeze the trigger, do not pull. Also do not forget to breathe.

As others have said, the main thing to be concerned about is safety. All MAJOR safety issues have already been addressed, so I'll tell you that the ONLY way to embarass yourself is to do something unsafe.
Bad group sizes or technique issues are NOTHING next to a cease fire violation or "sweeping" your fellow shooters or worse yet...an accidental discharge or shooting someone.
Just BE SAFE, follow the rules of the range and fire slowly since its your first time out. Technique and proficiency will come with time. Safety is your only concern for now.

Since you are new to handguns, forget your pride. Let others with experience (valid, sensible and practical) teach you. Weaver stance is a good start.
If you are shooting with people who have experience, then by all means learn from them. Obviously a pistol (any weapon) can be dangerous if handled or used improperly.
If you are shooting with a group of guys who just go out to act the fool and shoot stuff up, maybe you should look into a weapons safety course or even a handgun defense course. Or even some one on one with someone who has had some formal training either military or law enforcement. By all means have some fun, but be careful.
No embarassment or pride is worth injuring yourself or someone else. If you find a good teacher to show you the basics (SAFETY BEING PARAMOUNT) then you can take your technique and methods from there.
Good luck.

You can use the classic Weaver stance, or use the isosceles hold by thrusting the gun straight out in front of you with both hands, one hand supporting the other, and with equal pressure push and pull the gun to keep it rock steady. The Weaver stance is similar, except that you stanat an aggle to the target. Have someone who is familiar with shooting explainthis to you.

I admire your spirit; you have chosen a good caliber for all around shooting. Assume you have no military experience, so find somebody you know for a little one on one tutoring on "how to". It is sort of like learning to drive; all the books in the world don't really gel in your mind until you drive around the block for the first time. Pay no attention to those weak mentally challenged slaves who whine that if we are disarmed the bad people will definitely use a condom and be gentle when they work you over. You can be a victim or a wolf, your choice. Gun control is putting all your shots in the black center of the target.

If you don't want to look foolish, ask questions, ask for help, find a friend who knows how to shoot and go with him/her the first few times.
Two things to always remember and never forget;
1. EVERY gun is loaded should be assumed.
2. DON'T point a gun at anythng you don't want to shoot.

Safety first.. ( being safe so you don't hurt someone ) and go to prison
A weapon is handled as if it is always loaded..
keep it pointed away from people,, Keep it pointed down ..
A gun is always loaded.
know what's behind your target so no one gets hurt
the range of the bullet is well over a mile..
Don't shoot past anyone...
.In a group you notify everyone that you are firing....
