I would agree with this statement if it was a hundred years ago. If this were true abortion would be illegal, no rated R movies or porn, no explicit lyrics in music, no sex education in schools, being gay would be a crime. and this lists could go on and on. Each generation becomes more liberal in their beliefs as a whole. I am not a religious person and do not see this. Most in this country claim to be christian but claiming it and living it are two totally different thing.

If abortion were illegal the political religious fundamentalist movement would have to find another scapegoat. In fact, that's obviously why the anti gay marriage movement is growing.

If the fundamentalists were to actually change those things, there would be no political power left in religious fundamentalism. Since the fundies have let themselves be completely co-opted by the political right-wing, their power does not result in those kinds of changes.

But it's not only politics. If the fundamentalists didn't have villains, they'd have to create new ones.

It sounds like it is becoming dominated by them if it is not. Just listen to the presidential candidates and their thoughts on sex ed, reproductive choice, and evolution. Almost all the republican candidates are against these things. The U.S. has been in republican control for two terms. Sexual education is indeed now in some schools being reduced to abstinence only education which doesn't teach about using contraception if students should choose to become sexually active. This policy is already showing poor results. Some areas in the U.S. now have similar female reproductive health and teenage pregnancy stats with third world countries.

The country is more liberal than it was perhaphs 100 years ago but less than it was 30-40 years ago. The only reason that abortion is legal I think is because it became so in that more liberal period. Since then the right has been chipped away at and is in jeopardy now. There has always been porn and such, maybe only in the time of the pilgrims when you got put in stockades or branded with letters of shame was this sort of thing never indulged in. I think some fundamentalists would happily take us back to that period.

Bush in the Executive Branch
Until Recently Republicans controlled the Legislative Branch
The Judicial Branch is split but leaning toward the right
In God We Trust on the Currency
Nativity Scenes prevalent throughout our society during part of the year - some on public property
Many of our holidays are religious (Xmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Holloween)
Many politicians use the mantra "God Bless America" frequently
Many court cases invoving religious issues such as abortion, gays etc are ongoing and not resolved.
If you can't detect the religious overtones in our society you are living under a rock.

The fundamentalist are very organized and vocal. I live in a town where I am surrounded by them. New Life Church is here and it used to be pastored by former gay Ted Haggard. This is also the headquarters of Focus On The Family. Just a couple of miles North of where I live the two guys who wrote the LEFT BEHIND series live in Black Forest. This town used to be a nice town until these people came here. Recently Pastor Ted tried to bilk his former congregation out of $750,000. It's all about the Benjamins and power over the little people.

What are you talking about???? 85% of the United States consider themself as Christian.

The UNITED STATES has Porn, Rated R movies and music with explicit lyrics BECAUSE WE ARE THE LAND OF THE FREE!!!

This topic has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity.

AND SECONDLY, THE president's ratings have nothing to do with religion. His approval rating is based upon his work as a president, not a religious person.

Well..the fact is- the christian vote counts- no american president would get elected if he said he wasn't a christian. And since the constitution and the founding fathers are part and parcel of american culture because of the christian aspect... it is christian influence that has put abortion, homosexuality, atheism, in the limelight as well as influencing american government participation with NGO's as to whether or not certain countries can get american aid if they hold up certain christian values..And most importantly the christian movement is all about nationalism, privelage and supremacy and it is using government to gain it in almost every quarter of individual american lives.

Those are the people that are most intent on converting others to share their opinions. They thrive on controversy and are, therefore, more vocal. In my experience, most fundamentalist Christians really have no interest in any opinion that is different from their own. They "know" that they are better than you because of their beliefs. It is also my experience that they believe that the person with the loudest voice is always right....

It's just compared to their own countries, America is the most religious country in the developed world.

90% of americans believe in god, 15% accept evolution, wheras the number in the uk is 80% agree with evolution, 7% of Christians in the UK actually attend church regularly

Also Bush is a fundamentalist christian, so technicaly, they are right when they say that it is dominated by them.

We have become a more tolerant nation. I agree with your statement 100%. Not sure if it is in the best interest of the nation, but times are much different than they were 100 years ago.

Very true, however, the fundamentalists have the politicians talking and giving speeches about purity and morals, so it gives the appearance that the country is overrun by these types.

Of course, as soon as the politicians get into an airport bathroom another side of them comes out.
