According to Professor John Brookfield, a specialist in evolutionary genetics at the University of Nottingham, Professor David Papineau, of King's College London, and poultry farmer Charles Bourns the egg came first.
"Reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life. Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg."

The egg came first,

through evolution a very chicken like creature would have layed the egg - in which a DNA change would have occured to form what is now a chicken....

so there you have it..... the egg!

basically the egg cause of a zygote which is a mutation in male sperm so it could of come from any thing eg dinosaur sperm containing the zygote gene would produce a mutation ie a chicken or summat similar that then went on to produce more mutations eventually evolviing into chickens..... god i should get a life lol

omg, the egg, because of evolution whatever species was the step before a chicken would have laid the egg which would have hatched into a chicken. its alot more complex than that but thats it in simple terms especially for you, if you had any sense you would have searched for this question which has previously been asked about a million times!

I would go with the egg because Dinosaurs laid eggs didn't they...
Whatever the chicken evolved from probably laid eggs too.

No one ever specifies that it has to be a chicken egg.

Not a difficult question. Logic tells us that one cell would develop before multi-celled organisms. Since an egg is just ONE big cell... it is clear that the egg must have originated first.

Creationist response: God made the chicken exactly as you see it today. End of story.
Scientific response: Minute evolutionary changes occurred over the millennia to bring us today's chicken which continues to evolve.
Stoner response: Woaah! That is deeeep!

I love this one, I would say there had to be a chicken first to lay an egg, you can't just have an egg appear from nowhere, so there had to be a chicken to lay it.
