I would not recommend it. As has been already pointed out, newer engines are built to amazingly close tolerances, such as in the VVTI system. Toyota does not recommend 10W-30, ONLY 5W-30 for any temperature range (read your owner's manual). That tells me that the 15-40 will be WAY too much! The comparison with the 84 Supra is immaterial, as Toyota was recommending 10-30 into the late '90s, and only went to 5-30 somewhat recently. I don't think it is worth the savings. Even if it doesn't void your warranty (if you have records of changing your oil, it won't void it to use the 15-40) the long-lasting effects may not be good after the warrant expires.

Better to use that in a hotter climate but not impossible. When it's cold is when you'll have the most trouble, if any. I've heard it said that when a car heats up, all oil thins out. But, that's just hear-say.
When you say barrel, I assume this is new oil and not used. You certainly would not want to use used oil as you'd soon clog up the oil gallery and buying a new engine.
Some people are "wedded" to certain brands of oil and swear that if they change brands or blends that their car will begin to consume oil. I can't say if that's true or not.
I would check with the owner's manual.

Modern day engines are built to really close tolerances. Motor oil, like any other fluid can onlly be compressed so much. If the maker says 5w-30, it is best to use that. Thicker oil, except in very hot weather will not go between the parts to supply lubrication.

yes you can however you need to be in a warm climate. I have a 1984 Supra, and I run a 20-50 in the spring / summer months and a 5-30 in fall / winter months. The car has 220K on it and it run strong with no engine work. I expect to get 500k before having to do anything to the engine. PLEASE BE ADVISED, Do not run this heavy oil unless you're in a warm southern climate. Also note, you will experience a slight decrease in gas mileage as the engine will work harder with the heavier oil in it, but the good part of it,,,,,the parts will be well lubricated. Seeing how the oil is free, make sure it is a good grade of oil

Refer to the user manual. I got Avensis 1.6 VVt-i. I am using 15W40 for a long time and the engine clocking to 150K. I get it serviced from Toyota few times they only asked what grade oil I was using and used 15W40. Your Warranty not void at any circumstances as long as you are using oil described in Owners Manual.

Hi,
15-40 is alright -12c to 38c.
However it seams you care for your car perhaps you should stick to manufacturer recommendations.
ACEA B2 May be too rich or to poor for that specific engine.
My car's engine uses a mid priced engine oil ,according to my hand book it is the best for it.

Oil is cheap. If your Yaris is still under warranty, you will risk voiding it to save less than $80 a year.

You can use it, but you will see a slight drop in fuel milage.
If you live in a colder climate, you should probably not use this heavy of an oil. OIl is cheap. it will cost you maybe 20 bucks every 3 months or so to buy the proper oil. Not worth the risks of using the wrong oil.

You can get away with using it but it might cause more wear at start up. It should not show a drastic change at first but you may not get to put the miles on it that you could have if you used what they recommend.
