Too late they are here. What can we do about it now? We should all write to our congressmen and let them know that we do not want this to continue.
For HOV1: There will be 100 trucking Companies, not 100 trucks. Sorry if we are skeptical that the people that are supposed to keep lead out of our children's toys and poison out of our food will keep our roads safe from ill maintained mexican trucks with ill trained and screened mexican drivers. I pray that it doesn't take a family getting killed on the highway to wake people up to this.

Ive been in Mexico and have seen drivers there do some pretty tricky manuevering,I dont question they probably do have some good drivers,but I dont think they should be allowed to drive on US roads.Trust me,there are enough drivers here that scare me(but we all had to start somewhere)Most of the drivers here have no backing skills.It amazes me that most dirvers have to have at least 2 years experience to drive local(insurance reasons) and during those two years they are mostly under supervision for the first 6 months by a trainer while OTR.I think its unfair that they will let a Mexican national,whom didnt have to go through the same or very lax training have access to the roads I drive on.Second its hard enough for the beginners whom are here,whom speak and understand English,to navigate safely through Americas cities,now they want to have a non-speaking driver do the same....not a very well thought out idea.Some can say what about Canadian drivers?Well Canadian D.O.T. is as strict as the U.S. D.O.T.We can drive into Canada and vice versa,without threat of a insurance fraud being perpatrated upon us,Mexico,your a target for fraud,and if you make the mistake of driving a rig into Mexico,your arrested the second you come back into the U.S.!!!! The worst is,They are trying to DE-VALUE MY PROFFESSION TO SAVE AFEW DOLLARS AND STEAL MY LIVELY HOOD!!!

With only 100 truck carriers involved the figure cannot be anywhere near 100,000 a day! They only make 4.5 million short trips a year into the U.S.A., a short trip being a maximum of 20 miles over our borders. This is part of the NAFTA agreement and should have begun long ago. Canadian truckers can go anywhere in the U.S.A. anytime they please. I'm no Bush lover and I can't wait for him to GO but you cannot blame him for NAFTA. This step has simply occurred on his watch and that's fine. It was going to happen on someones at some time! This will also be a boon to Mexico's economy which is another good thing. Why shouldn't they be able to deliver the goods they make for us? Outside of Jim Hoffa's rhetoric about drug and alcohol testing which is union driven and a complete non-issue, there is no reason on God's green earth why they should not be allowed here. If you want to say you hate Bush, go ahead and add my name to the list. If you want to say you're afraid of illegals entering the country, go ahead but don't forget that they will be checked at every border crossing agreed upon unless they make an illegal cross, which has already been seen to by both governments. Outside of those two things, what's your beef?

OMG - I could give a FILIBUSTER on this subject. I am screaming MAD and have called all of senators on this subject. Do ppl realize the tragedy that will befall this country of ours not if, but when this happens. Reasons listed below...
1.) No Mexican drug testing program in place.
2.) They Have no vehicle safety/maintenance program.
3.) They can not read the road signs or understand the laws.
4.)They will work 24 hours a day 7 days a week. NO sleep
5.) They will steal a living out from under the men and women who have worked their Balls off for years.
These are just to name the BASICS. How about this..
Everyone can assume that we will have non speaking/understanding "High" sleep deprived Mexican drivers, going down the road in trucks with crap flying off the unmaintained trucks while the real drivers are unemployed and going hungry cause you want to pay Wal-Mart less for your toilet paper. HOW, MR BUSH, DOES THIS BENEFIT US???????? THINK!!!!!!

Well Mr. David, lots of cars and trucks are either assembled or have a lot of parts made for them in factories in Mexico and this has been going on since the 1980's just in case you didn't know? So you might be driving a vehicle right now that is somehow connected to Mexico. And as far as any cars or trucks go I would rather buy one that has been made in part or completely in Mexico then one that has been made in a commie country like China where things might have been made by prison workers who's only crime was speaking out against the government or spit on a sidewalk!

I hope the Mexican trucks have to pass the same safety inspections. 72,000 pounds and a driver who does not speak English scares the crud out of me. I bet this will clog up the scales and road side rest areas with broken down trucks held together with wire and duct tape. Hey gringo! got any jumper cables? NO MAS.

Why not? I mean, what the reason behind your statement? If you are talking safety reasons, the NHTSA has stated repeatedly that the Mexican trucks (of which there will be only 100 in this pilot study) will meet the exact same standards that U.S. trucks meet on our highways. This is not really saying much, as many of the trucks licensed to haul freight on our highways are by no means the peaches of the industry, though certainly most of the long haulers in the big commercial companies are perfectly safe and well maintained.
If you are talking purely on a political basis, quid pro quo (you scratch mine and I'll scratch yours, or free travel BACK and FORTH across the border), then I agree with you. I think it is all pretty much one-sided here, with the Mexican trucks getting most of the benefits and having to pay very little of the price.
Americans seem to have been pretty much screwed here, but that seems to be the case with a lot of the business dealings we have with Mexico. I see how NAFTA is good for Mexico, but I fail to see how it is good for the U.S., especially after the pilot program is over with and they get approved (which they most certainly will) to send every truck available over the border with little or no monitoring on this side.
I'm honestly not worried too much about during the period of the pilot program, as they know that there will be a lot of scrutiny and everyone will be on their best behavior. I'm worried about AFTER the pilot period, when every piece of junk that can roll will be carrying every conceivable load (including human cargo) north across the border to the promised land.
