The Fourier series is a way to represent any periodic function as a weighted sum of sinusoidal functions with different frequencies. Each frequency represented in the sum is called a mode. Periodic shapes with nondifferentiable points like a square wave or a sawtooth wave will give rise to infinte series, but they can be approximated surprisingly well with the first five or so modes.
