A Little and a lot. In a little; they both hold line, retieve line {hopefully with a fish on the end occasionally} and they both set at the end of a rod. In a lot;, the spinning real is easier to cast then the baitcaster. They are set up different. The baitcaster's line is put back on the spool of the reel horizontally, the spinning real it is vertical to you. The spinning reel can use lighter lines and smaller lures. The baitcaster uses heavier tackle but can haul in larger fish as it "wenches" on retieve. The baitcaster is usually heavier and not available in as many sizes.
In my opinion if you have this question then a spinning outfit is best for you. I use one most the time and think they are generaly the best. More pros are now using them as they have improved over the years.
I don't know what your fishing for or your location, but I hope my opinions and information help

What is the difference between spinning reel and bait casting?
I am new to fishing.
I have a spinning reel, but can I use this for general fishing off a pier?

A spinning reel is an opened face reel that can cast and retrieve line much like a bait caster. I think a spinning reel is easier to cast. I like using them better unless I am fishing for bigger fish, then I like to use my bait caster.

FishSteelhead ,Mickey, and everyone has answered the "What is the difference" Q darn good.
To answer "Spinning gear for general fishing from a pier"?
YES. Depending on the size of your spinning reel. You would want a good sized spinning reel; one that could hold at least 200 yards of 12 LB mono line.
Bass Pro Shops makes a decent, inexpensive pier/surf-fishing reel. The Ocean Master "10000" for $79.99 and the less expensive "Sea Lion" SL 50 for $39.99. However, I prefer Shimano, Penn, & Daiwa gear.
Daiwa SS (Whisker series) SS2600 $89.99
Penn Spinfisher 450 SSg $89.99
Shimano Spheros SP5000FA $99.99
Any of these will do "triple-duty" as pier/jetty/surf-fishing reels. Go to
www.basspro.com
www.cabelas.com
to get extra info regarding these products.
Remember, you will regret buying that "cheapy, freshwater, mickey-mouse" reel when you are hooked into,(and lose), a 20 Lb Drum or Redfish. In other words, get as expensive a reel you can possibly afford if you intend to fish exclusivly in saltwater. Saltwater is a much more "harsher" environment than freshwater and can ruin a "K-Mart special" reel in 4-5 trips!
Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

A BAIT CASTER IS ON TOP OF THE ROD. THE LINE WINDS AROUND THE CENTER HUB. THAT SPINS WHEN YOU TURN THE HANDLE. WHEN YOU CAST IT, YOU HAVE TO KEEP JUST ENOUGH FRICTION ON THE LINE IN THE REEL WITH YOUR THUMB THAT IT DOES NOT FREE SPOOL AND GET KNOTTED UP. A SPINNING REEL GOES ON THE BOTTOM OF THE ROD. THE LINE WINDS AROUND A BOBBIN THAT GOES UP AND DOWN, AND THE OUTSIDE OF THE REEL HAS A RETURN THAT GOES AROUND THE BOBBIN AS IT DOES ITS JOB. TO CAST THE LURE HOLD THE LINE WITH ONE FINGER AND TOSS THE LURE AT THE SAME TIME, LET THE LINE GO. WATCH ANY OUTDOOR FISHING SHOW TO SEE HOW THEY WORK

This link will give ya' great info., regardin' reel, rods, baits fishin' lines., etc., etc.. Suggest you bookmark it for future reference. Shouldn't be any problem usin' a spinnin' reel off a pier ~ just remember salt water corrodes, so make sure that you clean it well ta' stop the further process of corrosion. Good luck and "Fish On" ;)...
