$200 is not a lot to work with. And Sony has gone over to the dark side, moving product is more important than quality, audio, video, or unit life.

Look at Denon, Yamaha, or Onkyo first. OR E-bay for a good used one.

I hope the Bose posters were kidding because Bose sound is crap, especially compared to what you have already. That is a large amount to spend on the receiver. At the minimum, look into the Harman Kardon AVR635, which has a room eq function that is excellent. Very musical and warm sound. You should also look at the Denon 2807 and 4306, which also include sophisticated equalization functions which will adjust the sound to fit your room acoustics. At that budget you can also look into separates. Check out Outlaw Audio and the Emotiva brands for separate pre-amp + amp combinations that will be a huge step up in quality (and price)

I don't think you fried the amp, if you did fry it, it would be smoking, and the words PROTECT wouldn't even be flashing on there. I think I have the same receiver as you as well.

I've had this happen to me all you would do is just turn the receiver off and turn it back on. It usually happens when the wires aren't hooked up or if you're using your A/C plug on the receiver, also sometimes if you're using very powerful speakers and you have a loud movie playing.

for $200 (£150) i would have it fixed-i have never rated sony in the av market but for that sort of cash you won't get better.
