Hey guys. Because of the way my classes are set up, I think I'll be biking rather than walking to class a lot from now on. The only thing is, I don't want to do it with my relatively heavy laptop on my back the whole time.

What's the best way to carry stuff on a bike? Should I get a basket?

I guess what I'm asking is an alternative to putting my laptop in my backpack as I ride. Is it possible - or a good idea - to strap a Sony Vaio onto a bike rack? (I will NOT be leaving the laptop on the bike, but carrying it in to my classes)

I ride to class with a laptop using a messenger bag with a padded sleeve insert and that combinatoin worked great. A regular backpack is far more cumbersome on the bike then a messenger bag. I think its safer than mounting the laptop to the bike also say you have to leap off your bike to avoid a crash, the computer goes with you rather then down with the bike.

While these are all legitamate answers, I would consider the fact that the Sony Vaio isn't an inexpensive laptop. I would keep it in my backpack on my back. Baskets, racks, or panniers are good options but what if you have bicycle failure or something that's attached comes loose? Nope, I'd keep it on my back or buy a messenger type bag (like Jay P said) and prepare for the worst. It'll be safer being closer to your body on your bike.

Backpack.

I've used racks, saddlebags, baskets, messenger bags, handlebar bags. The best for "riding to class" type situations, for me, is the backpack. One tip - leave the shoulder straps long / loose so the pack rides low on your back.

make sure you put a durable rack on the back those things crumble too easy and forget abought a basket on the front unless you get some ribbons to go with your handie bars too hard to turn swift but good incase

I would purchase a messenger style bag. These bags are designed for riding and can carry tons of stuff. Plus, they just look cool.
