The only additional info I can provide and add to the great ideas is that after you have sanded down the surface, wash it well with TSP...found in the paint or hardware store. This will prepare the surface well for the primer and then paint.

My other recommendation is that you take the cupboards off and remove the hinges as well. Too many people take the easy route, and it shows in the end. This will also give you an opportunity to clean the hinges well (I've used turpentine or paint thinner) and they will look brand new when you put up your newly painted cupboards.

Good luck...and paint on with confidence...if done properly, they will look fantastic!

As the other poster pointed out you will need to rough up the shiny surface. Sanding is the cheapest but most labor intensive way. Also take off the doors hinges and knobs before sanding will make it so much easier and you can do a better job. After sanding wipe down all surfaces extremely well before painting. If you are going light in color you will need a good primer to cover up those "brown stains" or you will end up having to put four of five coats of paint so the stains dont bleed thru...good luck

DON'T paint them - they will look awful - honestly.

IF you insist on painting then scratch the surface with wire wool and use spray paint - primer followed by topcoat!

The generic paints in stores for this type of application are crap and do not last.

ALTENATIVE option - save money in the long run - go to your nearest IKEA and buy the doors only - did my whole kitchen this way for £119. That was all doors and drawer fronts - 13 doors and 5 drawer fronts. The only thing you may have to do is drill new holes on the cupboards - IKEA doors are slightly taller than standard

The time and effort to paint them is not worth the final result. As previously stated replace the doors. Vinyl wrapped doors are modern inexpensive and can be made to any size.

Change the worktops too and you ll have a brand new looking kitchen

Hope this helps

Have no idea what "foisty" means, but you will probably need specialist melamine paint - try Focus, Homebase etc and ask (or even look yourself!) to see what is available
Good luck

If you want to paint them make sure you rub them down really well with sandpaper so the paint will adhere to them.
