Perhaps they should change it to "agree" or "disagree". It is simply a way to judge whether you think the answer is good or not.
This type of feedback is extremely helpful to the asker! There are many issues that are not totally right or wrong but simply subjective; therefore, knowing that several people disagree with one answer might be helpful. Don't take it so personally, or so seriously.
Actually it is helpful in all situations: for instance if someone asked, "what is the sum of two plus two?" . And the first answer was 6, but the second answer was 4. The first answer got 10 thumbs down, the asker might consider that someone was playing a trick on them. If, however, they got also 10 thumbs up, hopefully they would get out the calculator and see what the actual answer was and not take it for granted that one side or the other was correct.
"Nasty Pasty" oh my, such strong language, you'll make Doris Day blush.

Some people just are that way, jealousy, meaness, or they want their answer to look good. I've seen thumbs down on some very good and factually accurate answers.
I reserve thumbs down for inappropriate, filthy, violates the Yahoo! code answers, and a few that were factually wrong that might steer someone into doing something wrong. I use it sparingly, after all, it is there to use, right?
I also use it for good answers. On a question I am considering answering, I check to see if my opinion or my facts are already being represented, and I check if the asker is asking for a vote. If my answer is already there, or voting is not asked for, I often mark it with thumbs up, or sometimes I just use it to tell someone their answer was a good one, whether I agree with it or not..
Cheery person here, I just try and have a good time here, and I admit I do get a little miffed when others go out of the way to spoil it for someone else.

Whether you like it or not, people judge you every day by how you act and what you say. The thumbs up or down choice is no different. Unfortunately there are people who use this forum to be rude, insensitive jerks and they deserve a thumbs down. Sometimes people just don't agree with what you have answered. That's life. This just puts it in your face quicker. You need a little thicker skin to handle this crowd.

I will give a thumbs down if somebody is really rude and doesn't answer the question. Like on "Baseball" if someone has a legtimate question about the Yankees and some bonehead just answers "Yankees suck" -- that gets a thumbs down.
But I won't give a thumbs down to anyone voicing their opinion, even if I disagree.

They do it for spite,i have been stalked for a while now by someone giving thumbs down,it does,nt really bother me,i do this to pass the time, the points don,t matter. There are also people who ask questions, who cannot take the flak, they lash out if you disagree.I give stars to good sensible questions and thumbs up for good answers,as you should. Some small kids and teenagers think it is funny, you cannot educate the brain dead.

Some people are just bitter. Others are immature. Some can't handle a truthful answer to a sensitive question. And others have no tolerance for a point of view that is different than theirs. I sometimes wonder if "Answers" would be better off without the "thumbs down" option.

There are several reasons for this.
Maybe the person you answered does not agree with you.
Someone else doesn't agree with any of the others who answered, so they go down the line giving thumbs down to everyone.
Some people hide behind the Internet and this gives them "power" over others.
I wear my "thumbs down" as badges of honor.
It is true, many people really are unappreciative of anything we do, so I do not spend a great deal of time doing research for anyone. Sorry, but it IS a reflection of the times.

Probably because your answer is/was better than theirs or you answered faster! Real rude but has to be expected as alot of answers are opinions rather than actual answers and also it's rare for people to agree!.People are moody cos they stay indoors all day!

If I think an answer is wrong or is in way counter productive or offensive - I give it a thumbs down. I don't care how much effort it took. (BTW I have no idea if I ever thumbs down one of your answers.)
