There is more to the fight then religion.Though I will admit that there are plenty of people who use religion as a reason to fight.Christian against Muslim.Jew against Muslim.Muslim against Jew.Muslim against Christian. You see?Muslims fight using their beliefs as the reason to fight just as much as anyone else. But the real reasons the west are fighting in the Middle East is over three simple things. They are:
1.Oil
2.Terrorism
3.Strategic interest
I personally don't agree with fighting the Middle East.Instead, I think the Middle East should just be cut off from the rest of the world. That way, we have no more worry of terrorists, limited oil supplies which would force us to come up with better fuel sources, and our strategic interest would be to simply isolate the Middle East so that the Muslims can live however they want to live without us being there but we can make sure they stay there so they don't become our problem anymore.

I wonder whether you want to ask a question or simply use Y!A as a rostrum for your opinions. But I can't pretend that you're alone in that respect, and that doesn't mean that you deserve an answer any less.
First of all, you make the mistake - as do many Muslims, especially those from the Arab nations - of believing that the interest of the US, EU, Russia and their allies in the Middle East is based on religion. This perception largely comes about because Islam is and has always been as much a political movement as it is a religious one and it is difficult for those brought up with this concept to realize that the non-Muslim countries' political systems aren't driven by religious concerns.
I'm not going to try to pretend that that's always been the case. Christianity, for example, has certainly been political for a large portion of its existence. But the rise of universal education in the US and Europe has eroded the relationship between Church and State.
The interest in the Middle East is based partly on economic drivers (the familiar oil problem) and partly on a matter of national security (the numerous militant Islamic factions and forces that would like to undermine US and EU governments are mostly based or financed in the Middle East).
But then I have to argue with the term "ferociously". As a military analyst, one has to concede that the military problems faced in Iraq and Afghanistan, for example, could have been overcome far more effectively if the operations had, in fact, been ferocious. If the "shock and awe" of Op TELIC had been sustained in a concerted programme of military terror then the militant elements in those countries would probably have been wiped out by the substantial and professional military forces ranged against them.
However, that would have been anathema not only to the soldiers themselves but also to their governments and to the voters who sustain those governments in power. As a result, the operations were prosecuted with the minimum possible "ferocity".
I realize that this is small comfort to the grieving of Fallujah, but I am speaking from a strategic point of view, not an operational one.
Islam is, indeed, a great religion. I'd argue with your assertions that "the Muslims" are "a nation" (let alone a great one). The divisions between Sunni and Shia have spilt the blood of hundreds of thousands upon the ground of the Middle East, North Africa and even Europe over the last thirteen hundred years and these divisions seem no closer to resolution in today's Iraq, where sectarian militias spend a great deal more time attacking each other than they do their unwelcome occupiers. And within those broad sects there is division: the Salafi and Wahhabis condemn less rigorous Sunni adherents as kuffir. The Sevener and Twelver Shiites are as diametrically opposed as ever.
The truth is that - if one stripped Islam of its cultural assumptions and centuries of obtuse "interpretation" by a largely patriarchal and misogynist religious-legal elite - and simply took the Qur'an as the sole basis of a religion, it would bear little relation to 21st Century Islam.
Of course, you'll disagree with everything I've just said. But I suppose I should say thank you for at least giving me the opportunity to make these points once more.

I am not sure that they are specifically fighting Islam and Muslim countries. Rather, they are just fighting whoever poses a threat to their economic and political interests. It's old fashioned empire building. The Western powers want to be the new Roman Empire.
If they are fighting Islam, then it is because they see it as an ideological threat to their dominance. Perhaps there is some truth in this, in that George Bush recently compared the "war on terror"/Iraq to the Vietnam war and said that both were ideological struggles.
If so, then he is saying that for America, Islam (or at least the sub-type of Islam that is opposed to America's interests or foreign policy) is the new Communism - something bad, to be feared, fought against, and defeated.
It could be fear politics - making the electorate afraid of a bogeyman, and offering protection, or it could be the neo-con ideology that America must achieve global domination and be the most powerful power, with none to oppose it, and probably it is both.
As for Europe, they do not all support this idea, but some, like Tony Blair do. They argue against a multi-polar world and say there should only be one superpower - America. I don't know what their arguments are for this, i haven't heard them. They just state it as though it is an article of faith that it is best if America rules the world.

"Islam is a great religion."
That is just your opinion. IMO, it is a religion with only 1 prophet, ie Muhammad and it is a religion created to satisfy his lust for sex, power and money.
"It respects other religions and glorifies Prophets Jesus and Moses."
You must be kidding, no protests were made when the pictures of jesus and moses were ridiculed. But once Muhammad was ridiculed or even depicted, muslims take to the streets with violent protests and riots resulting in several deaths.
"It has a unified view of the world in that all Prophets are brothers."
That is just a lie. Islam is not about all prophets are brothers. It is about all observing members of islam are brothers and they are instructed to hate infidels and hypocrites, yes even muslim hypocrites.
"It has brought great knowledge and wisdom to this world through the teachings of the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad."
Please, islam has brought nothing but terrorism, suicide bombings, a promise to heaven if you die in jihad and terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda, Taleban, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, etc.
"The Quran surely calls for fighting the infidels but this because these infidels are the cause of so many problems in the earth that is only fair to get rid of them and stop their evil."
Yes, that is why islam is so much like a cult. This was exactly the justification used by Hitler to get rid of the Jews during the Holocaust. The "Western Powers" call for fighting the islamists, muslims or mohammadist but this because these islamists, muslims or mohammadist are the cause of so many problems in the earth that is only fair to get rid of them and stop their evil.
"The Muslims are a great nation that respect women."
What a lie. Go to Iran, Sudan or Saudi Arabia and see it for yourself. Heck, look at how the Taleban treated their women.
"Respecting women is not simply of the presence or absence of a piece of cloth on the hair, the respect for women is ingrained in the laws of inhertiance and other laws regulating social lif, in addition to judicial rights."
Well, islam demands that women be respected like how pets should be respected.
"If I am to choose between marrying four women and granting them all the rights under Islamic law or having many "one-night stands" and living in sexual promiscuisity, I would choose the former."
Yes, you will choose the lesser of 2 evils, which is evil. I would choose to marry only 1 wife and stick with her throughout my life without sexual promiscuisity.
"Islam and Muslims are a great nation and people"
Yes. Al Qaeda will destroy the world.

The Western and Eastern Powers are defending themselves against Islamic agression. Islam was originaly spread by force and intimidation and is still being spread that way in many parts of the world.
If Muslims respects other religions why did the Taliban blow up ancient Buddhist monuments in Afghanistans and why are Muslims murdering Christians and burning down churches in Indonesia?
What did Spain or Greece do to Islam to deserve being invaded and occupied under a brutal regime for several hundred years?
Why was there a campaign to drive Christians out of what is now Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel?
How much freedom would a Jew or Christian get to practice their religion in Palestine, Syria or Iran?
Why is genocide being practiced on the Christians in the Sudan?
Why are the peacefull and tolerant Thai people being attacked by Muslim seperatists?
If Islam and Muslims are one great nation and people why are the Shiites shooting and suicide bombing the Sunnis?
You need to stop listening to your leaders and open your eyes and see what is going on in the world.
Every country in the world that has a sizeable Muslim population is being attacked by those same Muslim citizens.
You say Islam is under attack but it's the Muslims who are waging holy war on the rest of the world and blaming everyone but themselves for it.

Dear
It is only a Jealousy.
Holy Quran says the following about them:
2:120. Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with thee unless thou follow their form of religion. Say: "The Guidance of Allah,-that is the (only) Guidance." Wert thou to follow their desires after the knowledge which hath reached thee, then wouldst thou find neither Protector nor helper against Allah.
3;118. O ye who believe! Take not into your intimacy those outside your ranks: They will not fail to corrupt you. They only desire your ruin: Rank hatred has already appeared from their mouths: What their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made plain to you the Signs, if ye have wisdom.
3:119. Ah! ye are those who love them, but they love you not,- though ye believe in the whole of the Book. When they meet you, they say, "We believe": But when they are alone, they bite off the very tips of their fingers at you in their rage. Say: "Perish in your rage; Allah knoweth well all the secrets of the heart."
3:120. If aught that is good befalls you, it grieves them; but if some misfortune overtakes you, they rejoice at it. But if ye are constant and do right, not the least harm will their cunning do to you; for Allah Compasseth round about all that they do.
I hope you got a satisfactory answer and it is from God Allah.

I dont think I know so much about the details of the politicians and what goes on in their heads to support such a claim.
Im Muslim and I dont see anyone but Muslims (who form bad examples) as the bigger threat to the peace of my mind.
As much as it saddens me to say so, the criticisms we receive from the western world are not without their merits.
I will however draw the line when the criticism turns to pure hatred and insult.
And Ive seen more insult and hatred on Yahoo from westerners than constructive criticism. And sometimes that can cause me much frustration and sadness. But you learn to get over it and move on.

Islam is great religion based on nature and practical life. Now muslim have gone forth away from practical whether it is related to learning or hardwork. So when any nation becomes weak it is natural for stronger to run on. And muslims being special enemies of satan and satanic forces are bigger target because satan pushed all the world to have enmity with Islam being the only religion believing One God in perfect form. Prophet of Allah Mohammad pbu has informed about this :
Narrated Thawban: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their dish. Someone asked: Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He replied: No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allah will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and last enervation into your hearts. Someone asked: What is wahn (enervation). Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him): He replied: Love of the world and dislike of death. (Sunnan of Abu Dawood 4297-2015)
Is not now like this? America invited the world, Britain came, Spain came, beside many others even Korea came and also Japan came who is not involved in any military struggle just to enjoy the dish.

Any religion that villifies nonbelievers, blaming all of the world's problems on them alone, and advocates killing them...is not a great religion. Any religion that tolerates the killling of women because they behave "impurely"...is not a great religion. Any nation that does not give women the right to run their own lives, go out in public when they choose, and enter into a marriage of love...is not a great nation.
Luckily, not every Muslim believes that!

The actions of Muslims rebute your claim that Islam is all pretty fluff. Even when they're not blowing things up, something like over 10% of everyday Muslims think suicide bombings are sometimes justifiable. And the Quran, just like the Bible, says in numerous instances that women are inferior to men.
You can claim otherwise all you want. Reality disagrees with you.
