depends on the situation.
The katana and broadsword were both developed for totaly different circumstances. The medieval broadsword was a blunt tool meant for heavy impact. Medieval soldiers were dressed in chain mail or plate armour. They needed a weapon that could allow for heavy strikes to slash though that. The katana was mainly used in situations against armour consisting of bamboo or leather (the chest and helmet are metal but samurai were trained not to hit them)
they needed a more precise tool that could cut finely and not need to withstand heavy impact. It's been said that in a fight of a broadsword and a katana the katana would probably break upon impact with the broadsword, but before the time you would be able to lift your sword the katana would have already hit it's target.
So in a situation against heavy armour (I know in modern day nearly inexistant) use a broad sword
in any other situation use a katana

Katana means long sword... there are several types of long swords... A long sword was not always as razor sharp as a Katana b/c if it had the hardened edge going againt plate or a shield, the edge does not hold up. The various long swords, broad swords, 1.5 hand half swords had an edge and with enough force could cut.
As far as mythbusters saying a katana can cut through the swords listed.. no, that is not true entirely the damage to the blade cutting is not good either. The verdict was busted... didn't happen, not happening. The rapier was bent and snapped. Not a cut through. The rapier is a piercing weapon anyway. Typical myth promoted by some folks usually at Renfairs and such.
As listed above the purpose of the Katana was a cut and draw across soft targets, a helmet and armor is not those favored targets. A medieval sword could be a can opener, a cutting weapon, or a blunt weapon of destruction. If I was fighting... well if we had full armor, the long sword from medieval times, if no armor, then using only the choices listed above a 1 (to 2) handed Katana (long sword).
The D&D reference was priceless. Good job :)

Depends on who and how. I'd use a Katana just because I've had more experience swinging one around than a longsword. But thing is, movement starts with you, not the sword, so what determines the speed or the power of any sword comes down to how you move.
Besides, with a katana, you would probably never be defending, even if you wanted to.

There are 3 types of katana. The type used for everyday use and IAI DO 36 INCHES LONG
The DAI KATANA 2 types made purely for the battlefied one 48 inches long and another with a 24 to 30 inch blade on the end of a 5 foot staff .This was a real sword blade not a naginata or halberd blade.
In a test by MYTH BUSTERS a real katana cut through every sword put against it including broad swords claymores and sabres.

Expecting a sword fight to break out some time soon? Go with what you enjoy practicing for the mental and physical aspects; you will never use either in a fight.

The Katana is more versatile and durable(never heard of a 1,000 year old long sword that wasn't rusted, unlike katanas). Definitely more valuable too.

i dont know, i think i would choose a really big medieval sword because you can just hide behind of it when you get shot with arrows, but with a japanese sword, you can move much faster because its lighter. in the end you'd probably lose to a gun any how.
