We put peace be upon him(pbuh) or salallahu allaihi wassa lam (s.a.w) after we called his name Muhammad, and for other prophets we put a.s (salallahu allaihi salam) such as Moses s.a. not because they are not in peace. It is only for sign of honour ,respect and also love.Allah the only one God and angels give respect to Muhammad pbuh.So we as his followers should give respect ,honour and love also to him.
We should pay a prayer to Allah because we love so much to him.Allah has instructed all of Muhammad followers to hope he will always in peace..By making a prayer like that Muhammad pbuh will give help to us on the resurrection day.

Its a common misunderstanding of the translation of the original sentence:

The exact Arabic wording for that sentence is: May Gods Greetings be on him.

Not peace.

You wont ever see me say: peace be upon him because I know Arabic and I know the word: 'salawat' or 'salat' or 'salla' which are used in this sentence, means 'prayers' or 'greetings' not 'peace'.

Hope that helped.

It's an order: "Lo! Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! Ask blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation. " 33: 56 To show our gratitude to the man who took the burden to deliver the massege to us.

God sends down His blessings on the Prophet and His angels pray for him. O ye who believe, you too should invoke His blessings on him and salute him with the salutation of peace.

Those whom the angels cause to die while they are pure, they say to them, 'Peace be unto you. Enter Heaven because of what you used to do.'
