Forging requires a lubricant to be present, or frictional forces and energy dissipation will destroy the piece and damage the equipment. Graphite is an excellent solid lubricant (in air, not in a vacuum) due to its sheetlike bonding structure which makes it slippery. However, it should be noted that graphite oxidizes at 500 degrees Celcius.
