If they're not abusing their authority or breaking the law whats the problem with IA. Or is to "server and protect" all hype?

Shouldn't cops follow the laws they arrest others for breaking and don't cops always say that if you haven't done anything wrong you don't have anything to worry about?

Because they have the power to hold the police accountable for their actions.

Unfortunately most cops only have negative experiences with Internal Affairs. It's the same reason some people don't like traffic cops because they've only interacted with them when they've received a speeding ticket and make a negative association with "those type" of people in general.

Also, some law enforcement agencies have used the Internal Affairs function to dig up dirt (meaning things that generally aren't an issue or don't generate complaints like paperwork errors, etc) on officers who may be speaking out against things the command level is doing. In some agencies Internal Affairs act more like the Cheif's personal henchmen than the fair minded guardians that keep the force clean.

I've never had a problem with Internal Affairs because I've always done the right thing (or what I believed was right at the time based on what information I had available to me). I've even arrested another cop, but it was the right thing to do.

Cops hate internal affairs because that means someone made a complaint on them justified or not. When you know you haven't done something wrong and they investigate because someone filed a false complaint on you if is frustrating because you have no recourse with the liar that made the complaint. On the other hand if it is a dirty cop they don't want to get caught. Another theory is cops are supposed to stick together not screw each other over. I believe if you as a cop do something you know you should' t then you deserve what you get

Ive written several letters, on the subject Im about to tell you about. Back on June 14, 2010, my daughter was a passenger during a traffic stop. She was with Ryan Hill, whom she was to have no contact with, whether direct or in-direct. The officer let her leave with him. That was the last time anyone saw her alive. Had the officer did what he was hired to do, "Protect and Serve", I believe my only baby would be here. There was an ordered placed by a Judge. Is there anything I can do to see that this happens to no other child, or person? My email is ams2pls@outlook.com.

Just how many cops did you ask about their opinions on IA? Or let me guess, this question is prompted by watching some cop show on TV...Or maybe you just don't like cops...

I don't have a problem with IA. They investigate complaints against us. They investigate thoroughly and without prejudice, just like I do on the street.

IA has investigated me, based on a BS citizen complaint. Compliant was "unfounded", citizen was charged criminally with false reporting and I successfully sued them civilly.

The problem some cops appear to have with IA, is that often their investigations appear to be politically motivated, rather than based on actual wrongdoing.

PS-Its "Serve and Protect", not "Server"

The exact same reason we as citizens get nervous when a cop is following us.
We haven't done anything wrong, but they are there on our bumpers, knowing all along that if they stay there, we will do everything in our power to not screw up, and hoping upon hope that we do, so they can whip out their power and impress us with their authority.
It's a power trip. Strap a gun and a badge on them, and suddenly they are the rulers of the masses. Strap a political badge on them, and they are the rulers of the rulers of the masses.
Strap a ruler of the world badge on them, and suddenly they are the rulers of the world, and still want more.
Welcome to the world.

Because they are paranoid and thing internal affairs are out to get them. Cops call those working in IA "head hunters".

Cops don't like anyone looking too closely at their behavior. Most particularly not other cops. Cops know all about cops and they know how much they can trust them to investigate without manipulating evidence, etc.

And you believe everything you hear ?
I didn't think so.
IA serves as a control on loose cannon cops- you know, the ones who make such good TV watching.
'good cops' should have no worries, 'bad cops' should lose sleep at night- right.
Everybody hates having someone look over their shoulder and criticizing.

Most cops don't hate IA. You really watch too much television. I don't. If a cop is dirty I don't want him working near me anyways.

People generally don't like being watched or judged on what they are doing... regardless whether its right or wrong. It is something about the human psyche. Police are especially aggrieved by IA because they are ordinary people granted AUTHORITY... people who have Authority don't like to have it challenged..
