Some people read the Bible and take the lessons and precepts in a very literal sense.

Others read the Bible and read into the symbolisms and report a greater spiritual enlightenment.

I like to see how literally and how figuratively I can take passages, just for fun sometimes. For instance:

--Did you know that a literal translation of Genesis 1 can still support a 20 billion year old universe?
--Imagine how one of the Apostles might describe modern day military aircraft in 1st century terms, then read Revelation 9:1-11

I read the Bible with love, an open mind and respect of the wisdom of the words shared.

My reading of the Bible is just one aspect of the many teachings through various sources that's available to us . . . The Bible, lessons through others in life, listening to the message of the soul, attending mini lectures dealing with spiritual awareness . . . So, I read the Bible with an open mind that it's beautifully one Light aspect of many for us to learn and grow from.

Often.Daily and in between. I read it while I am on the yahoo answers. Your questions prompt me to look in the word for answers I learn a lot and I get a lot out of it too. God spirit is awesome and it enhances my walk with God. I have learned that prayer is a very good thing; it gets you closer to a relationship with the Father.

I learn precept on precept line upon line here a little there a little. The word of God gets clearer every day. I gain wisdom and most of all understanding.

I like yahoo answers and I like hearing from people and their issues. We all have them and God knows it.

How should we interpret/understand the Bible?

I interpret the Bible according to the ordinary rules of written communication. Those sections of the Bible written as straight forward historical narratives, I take as such. The poetic sections of the Bible follow the rules of poetry. There may be some exaggeration or hyperbole, but no outright falsehood. As for the prophetic sections of scripture--if they are plainly stated I take them at their word. If they are obviously symbolic, I look for the meaing of the symbols. Sometimes scripture itself gives those meanings, in which case I accept them. Other times the meanings of symbols are not given. In that case I do my best to understand them in light of other clearer sections of scripture.

The best interpreter of scripture is scripture. The unclear passages should be interpreted in light of the clearer passages.

For believers, the Holy Spirit superintends the reading of scripture. This is helpful for understanding.

Read scripture prayerfully.

Read scripture without an agenda. Agendas blind you to what scripture is saying if it is contrary to your agenda.

Finally, interpret the times in the light of scripture, not the other way around.

First start off with a prayer that God will enable you to learn his word. . You have to read the bible with a clear mind and heart or else youll be flipping through pages like its an ordinary book. Then after reading thank God for allowing you for reading his word and sometimes you may not understand it at the time burt later it will come to you.

I read it not in a literal sense. I compare the stories/gospels. I analyze everything. I then ask...Where did these stories come from? Who wrote them? What was it like during the time it was written? How come the stories contradict each other? Isn't the bible supposed to be the innerant word of god? What is a horse shoe? What does a horse shoe do? Is anybody listening to me?

It might be wise to get a Bible with center reference columns and concordance, I think these will help you.
