I do know that heroin addiction came about because they thought it was a treatment for morphine addiction. I was just wondering whether the same is true in the case of cocaine-- if its proliferation started out because it was a treatment for something.

Yes, cocaine started out almost the same as heroin did. In the early 1900s, it was deemed as a main stimulant drug that was used in a lot of elixirs and tonics that were used for the treatment of various illnesses. It was also used as an anesthetic and due to the fact that it has mentally stimulating effects, it was used for the treatment of depression. Coca-cola even put this in their products and claimed it to be good for oneself.

In the early 1900's cocaine was legal. I work in the Medical Field- There is a "Cocaine Mist" that is utilized when a person comes to the Emergency Room with a nose problem, such as a bloody nose that cannot be controlled. (Acute hemataxis)- the cocaine mist is utilized to deaden the nerves in the nasal are in order for the Physician to cauterize the offensive artery/vein which is causing the bloody nose. Hope this helped answer ur question. Good Luck and take care!

cocaine was used as a medication for lots of things back in the day... sometime in the 1800's i think. until it became an issue of addiction as well then it was outlawed. that's how it all goes. first it's legal then it's not. ecstassy used to be a legal drug too!

wikipedia says that it was first "powdered' in 1860 but was outlawed in 1916. before being made in powder form natives would just chew the leaves to get a boost of energy.

yes it was used in coca cola and is still used as an anesthetic for eye surgeries. Cocaine is nasty stuff when abused!! the ancient aztecs used it for energy from chewing coca leaves. And that where i think they should have left it!! Drug dealers cut the stuff with kerosene and many bad chemicals like methamphetamines. I mean maybe god had a purpose for the stuff but we ruined it. Like i said it should have been buried with the aztecs!!!

YOU USE TO BE ABLE TO ORDER MORPHINE FROM THE sEARS CAATALOG. IT WAS PART OF EVERY GOOD MEDICINE CHEST. COCAIN WAS AN ORIGINAL ADDITIVE TO COKA COLA, IT WOULD PROVE THE DRINKER WITH A PICK ME UP! (IMAGINE THAT!)

MARIJUANA USE TO BE A LEGAL PRODUCT AS WELL.

THERE IS QUITE AN INTERESTING SERIES ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL ABOUT HOW THES EDRUGS WENT FROM LEGAL TO ILLEGAL.
