The only people that have to go through level one pepper spray exposure are the ones that are doing MP type duties. Generally MA's for the Navy and Auxiliary Security forces, MP's for Army and Marines, and BP for Air Force. The only reason that you have to have this exposure is that it's part of the certification before you are allowed to carry it as part of your duties. All law enforcement personnel also have to go through this same certification in order to be able to carry and use pepper spray.

I'd say he needs to keep his eyes and mouth closed. Tell him to not exfoliate (use a scrubber in the shower), and it would help if he didn't shower right before hand because it makes your skin more sensitive if all the dead skin is gone. I knew someone that got a whole can of mace unloaded on them and they said they actually started choking and their breath closed off, but normally you won't get a whole can unloaded on you for training purposes. he said it was worse than getting tased (which he had to get for taser training). Pepper spray gets its sting from oleoresin capiscum (capsasic acid), the same agent in peppers that makes them spicy, hence the name. A mixture of milk and baking soda (a base, sodium bicarbonate) will actually neutralize the acid. Think about when you were in 2nd grade and they did the vinegar and baking soda volcano. That reaction is just neutralization of the acid and the base. He shouldn't rub his eyes, or touch his skin. Normally when they do this kind of stuff and its planned, they'll have a medical team available to assist in the recovery. It's not gonna kill him, it's just not very fun. I'd advice him to inquire on that. They say to wash your hands in alcohol since water doesn't really wash the oil away. Which totally makes sense from a chemistry stand point. Water will only dissolve salts and "dissolvable substances". Common rubbing alcohol has an organic component that can somewhat wash away the oil, but not completely. I just say that because that's what I hear.

Was in the Navy. We didn't get pepper spray, but we did get the tear gas. Went into the chamber and learned how effective a Mk V gas mask was. Then we got to take it off and experience how effective tear gas was. Didn't have to recite anything, or repeat or social security number, just stand there until our Company Commander thought we had enough.

We don't get sprayed with pepper spray. Its called the gas Chamber and what they put in there is actually more of a tear gas for riot control. It sucks and horrible. I puked and the burning it painful. But everything you go through in Boot Camp or Basic Training is a learning experience. In order to serve your country and prepare for war or whatever your country needs you these are things you need to know and learn.
Good luck

I never got sprayed with pepper spray but i did go through the Gas Chamber. We stood out side the Gas Chamber the drill sergeants open the door and when they did you could already smell the CS gas. Then they tell you to put on your gas mask and make a line and start going in once your in they tell you to take a deep breath and then to take off your gas mask once you do that the drill sergeants ask you to say your last name first name last four of your social your drill sergeants name platoon number and your soldiers creed.most soldiers don't ever finish there soldiers creed the drill sergeants tell you to put your gas mask back on and take deep breaths than to take it off when your leaving outside there are cameras capturing you most embarrassing moment when your eyes are closed and your tearing and your snot is down to your toes. You'll end up running around chili mac round flapping your arms like a chicken until you can open your eyes. They call it chili mac road because soldiers are feed a chili mac MRE before the gas chamber and some end up puking it up all over chili mac road.If you have a cold or any sinus problems before you get in the chamber Best believe you won't be coming out with them

They didn't spray us. We went into what is called the "gas chamber" it's actually tear gas. First we went in with are gas masks on then had to take them off and remain in for a while. Yea, it really hurts and burns, but it's not harmful. As far as getting sprayed goes I don't know about that.

Wow some of you guys had it easy, we had a full stack of CS "pellets" and we stayed in for a long time, well long enough for 8 Soldiers to say their SS backwards and sing the Army Song.
Everyone was shaking like a leaf and barfing mostly dry heaving, My skin was on fire and every cut or sun burned area was like bee stings, it was tuff tho this was Combat Engineer OSUT.
Dont pour water over your head for any reason after being in the chamber, dont drink milk the moring of the test or eat alot.
We were so CS'ed that our BDUs set the NBC alarm off 3 times during that night, one of the few nights I didnt have fireguard!
Those nice Drills even taped CS nades to long sticks and stuck them in out tents at night druing the 30min sleep we got in 3 days during FTX.
I'm gald they did that tho, because anything less would be like the Marines :)
LOL Looks like we have a Marine in the room I got a thumb down. No its not tear gas its the military version of it thats alot stronger called CS gas it;s the common name for 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (also called o-Chlorobenzylidene Malononitrile) the civies use Benzyl bromide tho some CS is uses by police its not as commen as Benzyl.
First To Fight For The Right, And To Build The Nations Might, And The Army Go's Rolling Along over the Marines..

Nope.
But most members of the Army, Marines and Air Force, do have to go thru the tear gas chamber at some point in their service.
Not sure about the navy.
It's not that bad, you just get a snotty nose and your eyes hurt for 30 mins or so.

Went into the gas chamber with mask on. You watch them put tear gas into the chamber. Stepped up to the line, removed mask, gave name, rank, SSN, platoon and platoon motto. Waited for permission to leave. After permission is granted had to walk calmly to the exit or they would drag you back to the line where you had to repeat. Not fun. Do not shave if you ever have to do that. Burns like living hell!
