Amish woman and girls sit on one side of the mass the left, the men and boys on the right. They all face forward during the service until a male opens the (GOOD) book. At the moment the cover is lifted all the woman and girls shift in their seats and look away, then face forward when it is closed. Now I know this is just another example of the yoke of religion on females. And when woman are asked why they all reply because my mother did, no other reason. The most fasinating thing about the Amish is that they live more to the teachings of the bible than all the other bible offshoots even the first christians the Catholics. Now some will say the Catholics weren't first but every one knows that all others are break-aways. If the world acually lived like the Amish this would be a better place. Why do you think they look away?

If I had to guess, and this is purely brainstorming, I'd say it has something to do with Eve eating the apple and tempting Adam to do the same (bible's words). As you know, that was the first story told by Christians, to lower women on the sexual hierarchy scale. This just seems to me to be another way of doing the same. So, in this sense it's as if they aren't to look upon the "word of god" (again not my phrase) because they betrayed him first. However, the Amish aren't alone in this. It was only fairly recently that the Catholic Church started allowing women on the alter during mass. Before it was only alter boys and fellow priests and to this day women are not allow to be priests at all. (I went to Catholic Church 2-3 days a week as a child). Other Christian denominations have been more flexible about this and many allow women Pastors and Alter Girls. It seems that Amish are very strict in their beliefs and practices and take much longer to change them (for obvious reason), Catholic want everyone to think they are strict in their beliefs but they will more quickly change their beliefs to appease the masses and get more followers and yet other Christian bases religions are even quicker to change as it seems they wish to stay one to two steps ahead of the Catholic Church to divert more of the money their way. (The Catholic Church being the richest and all).

Each Sect has their own reasons for the pace at which they change, but I'd agree that the Amish probably have the most honest reasons, as they don't change practices often and they don't do it for money or more followers to make "their" religion better. They just believe what they believe and don't concern themselves with what others believe.

Hi and good morning....My dad's side of the family lived closely to the Amish in Arthur Illinois. It use to be many years ago (what my grandmother had told me) that the Amish men use to have their worship service in a closed type wagon. No women were allowed at all whats so ever. The women would be in the kitchen, cooking up the Sunday dinner while all the men would be having their church meeting in this large wagon. She also told me that the reason that the women were not allowed was that 'only man' were worthy enough to worship God. I'm thinking maybe 'Eve' and how she defied God maybe by eating the 'forbidden fruit'. Times have changed to where I have come to notice that Amish women are allowed to do more things than they use too. Such as to attend church even though not being able to look upon the Holy Book. The Amish go by the 'old ways' and sometimes the 'old ways' are better than the current ways of life. Have a blessed day!

Women don't need saving. Men do. Men need to see and hear things that men read and write. It's boring to women to hear it over and over. When will men finally get it right? We just roll our eyes and look away. Sometimes we plug our ears.
