im starting a diet to promote acne free skin, and in the book im reading it says oatmeal among other foods is good for acne. but it says not to use instant oatmeal, on my trip to the store it seems they all said instant, is there an oatmeal that is not instant which is what the diet calls for?

the best one is old fashioned oatmeal - the grains are whole, not broken into pieces.

Its called old fashioned oats. The only difference is it takes longer to cook. It's only a few minutes ( 5 or 6) so I don't know why anyone needs "instant" oatmeal.

You can add dried fruit to the water before it comes to a boil, then add your oatmeal. That's where the idea of flavored oatmeals came from. The difference is you will be using real fruit, not artificial flavored junk.
Enjoy, oatmeal doesn't have to be yucky when cooked right.

Quaker makes a brand that I favor a lot. Its just advertised on the package as Old fashioned Quaker Oats. Its in a cylinder like package. I personally like these better than instant because there bigger oats. I make it as though it were instant though I just pour like a 1/2 cup or more into a dish dash some water and put it in the microwave for 1:30 seconds.

I'm kind of trying to do the same thing I'm on a diet too not just for weight loss but I want to clear my skin too. Yogurt is really good for clearing acne because of its zinc content. 100% Whole Grain Total is very good for clearing skin too and for healing acne scaring. I think pretty much any fruit or vegetable is wonderful for helping to clear skin. Tomatoes are really good for your skin. So is pineapple. I try to eat fresh cut pineapple a lot because my mom always tells me that its full of these healing enzymes that are really good for the skin.

Hope my extra added info helped you out too! And good luck! ^-^

It could be refering to steel cut oats which are "whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are golden in colour and resemble small rice pieces.

Steel-cut oats are also known as coarse-cut oats, pinhead oats, Scotch oats, or Irish oats.

In comparison, the other main variety, rolled oats, are flake oats that have been steamed, rolled, re-steamed and toasted.

Because the steel-cut oats are more "natural" with less pre-processing, they may be more nutritious than the more popular rolled oats.[citation needed] Steel-cut oats are also nuttier and retain a chewier texture than rolled oats.[citation needed] Like most whole grains, steel-cut oats take much longer to cook than pre-processed oats.

Many people feel that steel-cut oats provide better flavour than rolled oats due to the lack of preprocessing.[citation needed] Usually steel-cut oats are not preprocessed then dried. They are often packaged in a vacuum tight container (like a coffee can) to preserve freshness.

As mentioned, they take about 30 minutes to cook (instead of 5 minutes).. but I can assure you... it IS worth it. They are a whole different experience.. they are not just a bowl of mush. They have a really great texture, and are much more hearty. Try cooking them as the directions on the package, and then add a teaspoon of PURE maple syrup(spend a little more at the market and get PURE maple syrup.. not mrs. butterworths or anything, which is just corn syrup, not maple syrup at all), and a tsp. of brown sugar... it is heaven in a bowl. (You can add more of the brown sugar and/or syrup to taste)

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the oatmeal... I swear u will never go back to instant oats again...

p.s... if you dont have a lot of time to prepare breakfast in the morning, make a big batch of steel cut oats at the beginning of the week and store it in a tupper ware container in your fridge... it should store well for a week, not any longer though. Then, in the morning, add your toppings and/or flavorings and heat to one serving of oatmeal.. and VOILA!

Good luck with your skin, too, by the way! Hope this helps!
