I bought milk in bulk at the grocery store and decided to freeze 2 half gallons to preserve it. How fresh will it keep and for how long? Does it taste bad or different after freezing?

don't know how long you are planning to keep it frozen but we used to go to the base once every two weeks to buy all of our groceries and would buy enough milk to last the whole two weeks. we put it in the freezer in the carboard 1/2 gallon cartons and never had any problems at all. you do have to be sure and shake it every time before you use it because it does tend to seperate a bit, but a quick shake is all it takes to re-mix it. i went my entire childhood on milk that had been frozen and it never killed me. tasted just the same unless you didn't shake it, then it might be a little watered down

Does Freezing Milk Preserve It

When my children were younger, I was on a food nutrition program called WIC. I used to get more milk than the kids could drink from them and used to freeze it. I never had any problems with it and I sometimes had it around for several months in the freezer. You just have to let it thaw out completely, in the fridge not the counter top, and then shake it up before using it. The milk fat and water separate but as long as you shake it to remix them its fine. I never had a complaint from my kids or any of my nieces about it tasting band or funny.

freezing milk doesn't affect the taste. when you unfreeze the milk you can keep it for maybe over a week and it will still be fine. freezing stops the maturing process.

as for fresh milk, as long as the carton is sealed the milk won't go bad for around a week after the due date. milk will keep for around 3-4 days even after the due date if its opened.

whole milk?

My main concern is that the containers will burst since milk is mainly water and water expands when frozen.

Also, with whole milk, I'd worry about the milk and cream separating and tasting grainy if you drink it by the glass. Non-fat and 2% probably freeze well since the dairy fat content is a lot lower.

I freeze bottles of milk and then defrost them when I want to use the bottle. I would say freeze everything.. but im not too sure about butter. (Mash+veg is ok to freeze)
