the way I see it, the whole problem started when your cheque bounced.
Hope that's a learned lesson for the future, whatever the outcome of this.

To challenge this you first need to confirm whether or not the collection has hit your credit report yet or not. If it hasn't, then the best thing to do would be to contact the corporate office and haggle a deal out of them. Tell them you will do what ever is financially possible for you to take care of this minor discrepancy. They will work with you and give you time. The time part you need to ask for. Tell them you need three months. Or maybe they're willing to take payments. Regardless, pay the bill. You'll be kicking yourself later when you try to apply for credit if you didn't. Now, if it hit your credit report you can file a dispute. By law, the credit bureau must freeze the account and mark as, "In dispute". They will then have to investigate. They will contact the original credit granter. (apartment complex). The complex will now have exactly 30 calender days to prove that the account is at your fault. If they don't respond, most don't waste the time because it doesn't hurt them to ignore the dispute, then it will be wiped from your record. If they do reply, then it stays on there until paid, or 7 years. See the importance to satisfying the account. Here's the catch. Write the credit bureau a letter by hand only. Don't file a dispute online. You'll be giving them to much info and you want to remain very general about things. Sign your name and say basically that the amount filed is incorrect or the account has been satisfied. Nothing else. This is important. Other than this, there isn't a whole lot you can do. If you end up paying the bill, it will be visible for exactly 2 years from last activity so every time you apply for a loan, or credit card, they'll see it. Pay in sooner than later. The dispute process takes time, to much time. Good luck to you.

There are landlord tenant laws and most places they only have a short time to say you have a problem like damages so you don't get back your deposit. Find out where you can complain. I don't know what a portial is but if you turned it in they should have recorded it. Did you do a final walk through before you left? They may have written something on that to help you.
Tell the collection agency that you don't owe the money and they need to prove it.
They may take you to court to collect but you take your proof like a copy of your money order and your move out walk through report and tell it to the judge.

You need to get the proof together and then forward it to the credit bureaus that are showing the delinquency. They will do an investigation and hopefully force them to remove the bad rating from your credit. Good luck!
