none of mine were picked off the wall. My first was a pink ribbon . He drew it out and everything. I'm going to add more to it soon. My second was a tattoo of Gary the snail. It's not great art, but it's what I want and I have my reasons. It's not bad art, it's just not like my other. My third is my fetus tattoo. Completely drawn by Leif. I love it. I looks more like art than a tattoo. It took about 5 hours to do. My wing scars were drawn by my artist for that. I sent him pics of the look I liked and he drew something he could do that he thought I'd like and I did and it's now on my back.
I don't think I could ever just go into a shop and pick something off the wall and have it tattooed on my body. Tattoos are forever. It shouldn't be something you see and decide right then and there to do. It should take time and thought.
However, everyone I know with tattoos has picked at least one off the wall.

I drew an elaborate dragon and had an artist slap him on me and needle him in. I got a pair of wolves off a wall, and a tribal with a few alterations to the design. I had a custom traditional skull with key hole in the forehead tattoo drawn and put on by the artist (free of charge because I bought them lunch - but I tipped $20)

I have over 30 tatts 1 tatt I got as a cover up to get in the Army it is the only one that came off the wall. I either drew or had my artist draw what I wanted. Also everything I've drawn my artist and I talked about and decided what changes needed to be made to best suit that ink!:)

4 of my 5 tattoos are custom pieces. My last one, the artist actually drew the picture on my skin according to my specifications before tattooing it so I know no one will have a copy.

The tattoo I'm going to be getting is one that I have thought up myself but I have a friend who chose both of her tattoos from either the wall or a book at the tattoo parlor. I don't think I could put something on my body that I chose off a menu like a Big Mac lol.

All three of my tattoos are custom designed.
I would never pick a piece of flash off the wall. Tattoos are supposed to express who you are, and getting something like that says "I am like everyone else, and I will go to great lengths to be as conformist as possible."
What a terrible message to send to yourself and others.

One of my tattoos is from flash:

However, I knew the artist who drew the flash, and you probably won't find it on a wall near you :)
Otherwise, I tell my artist what I want and he throws in his own thoughts and suggestions. We discuss it until it's decided and drawn out.

my tattoo artist strictly does custom tattoos. he doesn't have any flash in his part of the shop and will refer customers who want flash or something flash like to another tattoo artist. so all three of my tattoos are custom pieces. part of my back piece he actually freehanded on my back with a sharpie which was cool.
yay for custom tattoos and the awesome artists who do them!!!

My mermaid and swallow by my dear friend, Alanna.
My hip and wrist myself.
My lower lip isn't really a design, it's just a serial number, but I didn't come up with it. I guess I have to credit that to whoever assigns serial numbers to racehorses...
I think I can get away with it though, seeing as it is a memorial piece.
The ones that picked off a wall will never admit it.
