Because they assume to much. When most religious people hear the words agnostics, atheists, or polytheists, they instantly assume that since that person doesn't share in the belief in their god, that those people cannot be moral, caring, upstanding good people. The reason I say this is because with religion you are either with them or against them. There is no in between. You are either good or bad. I think you get the idea. Religion claims that it wants to bring people together in love and peace, yet this type of thinking shows just how false this is. Religion only wants to bring people together in peace and love if you are like them or become like them. It plainly states in the bible that if one isn't a Christian or refuses to become a Christian, he or she should be shunned. How is that for loving your fellow man!
EDIT to Neggandbattlemaster
You are so sadly mistaken in your description of agnostics and atheists it is pitiful. Have you ever picked up a dictionary in your life? I will give you the definition of both, just so you don't make yourself look uneducated in future post.
Agnostic - One who disclaims any knowledge of god, but does not deny the possibility of his existence.
Atheism - The lack of a belief in the existence of a god.
"Agnostics have no idea what they think."
Agnostics know exactly what they think, and it is either that current religion doesn't quite provide the answers to life they are seeking or they don't know enough about current religions to make an educated choice as to which one they wish to follow. Either way, they still believe in a higher power, but have yet to find what they consider the true path.
"Atheists have an extreme belief that a higher power cannot exist, and ultimately that life is pointless."
This is a ridiculous assumption if I have ever seen one. We atheist simply have not been presented with proper evidence regarding the claim that there is a god, therefore we have no reason to believe he exist. Do you understand that atheism isn't a belief system, but a total lack of belief. These are totally different things. I will be the first to admit that if I were to see, what I consider credible evidence, I would have to reconsider my disbelief of god. This has yet to happen, despite all the claims flying from the mouths of the religious. What leads you to think that an atheist sees life as ultimately pointless? Is it that we don't believe in an afterlife? Trust me when I say that atheist value life just as highly, if not more, than religious folks. You see, since we don't believe in an afterlife, we focus our attention on enjoying this life to it's fullest.

Those who are offended by the idea of agnostics, atheists and polytheists have a strong emotional need to feel that their monotheistic beliefs MUST be the only right one.
If their belief is not the ONLY right one, then they feel they are lessened somehow....
Therefore, they feel they must defend from things that would not attack them otherwise as most polytheists do not care a plugged nickel about what a monotheist believes if they do not try to enforce their beliefs on others.....

Agnostics have no idea what they think and parade it around like it's the answer (so do some Christians, Muslims, and Jews) Atheists have an extreme belief that a higher power cannot exist, and ultimately that life is pointless. Polytheism is a rather old idea, related to making a god for every different emotion the earth shows. As societies became more advanced, and monotheism flourished, the idea was dropped, and god became much more emotionally multifaceted and human.
I'm not offended by agnostics, unless they won't listen to anything.
I think that if there was a church of devout atheism, you'd have to be an a s s hole to join.
Polytheism seems archaic to me, as does ancestral worship.

This sounds like a sturdy concept. there are various distinctive labels human beings use to describe themselves, I want scientific naturalism because of the fact it defines my ideals extremely than defines what my ideals at the instant are not. This distinction does not look to count to maximum folk although. i might individually prefer to connect a club that discusses technological information, the psychology of perception, the administration structures employed via religions, etc... that's greater of a political situation than a non secular situation because of the fact the only reason at the back of an atheist to even talk faith is interior the context of ways faith controls a given inhabitants or society (till you're a form of people who purely decide for to rant and experience greater advantageous to individuals).

I think most are occasionally offended by the assumptions others make, as many of these answers show. Most of them are meant to be offense. We believe anyone can believe whatever they want, and of course that is what they will do. That in itself does not make it true. Christians believe that what they share about Christ is true, and it is apparent that many do not agree. I think they are more offended by what we have to say about God and sin, than we are of their insults.
People, we are just trying to tell you that Jesus really is the way, the truth, and the life. Your choice to believe it or not. It is not about who is right or wrong... it's about God and truth. We tell you because we love you, while many of the questions and answers by unbelievers here are hateful and spiteful. There is good and bad in both groups, but more non-Christians seem to lean toward being offensive.

They are offended because they think its wrong to believe this. Anything different from what they do is out of the question. They can't accept the thought of freedom. They are enslaved in religions that are brainwashing them that think there fairy tale book called the bible is going to bring them hope and happiness and solve all there problems. It isn't going to solve you problems. People have such a low mental and inttelectual stantards and they choose to believe in things that can't happen. That why don't like us. one word FREEDOM!!!!!!!! Thats why they hate us.

God is presumed to be the source of morals. Without a god, one is assumed not to have morals. People are offended when something so dear to them is scoffed at by others, not revered by others. They don't like other people having beliefs that would make their own beliefs wrong. People feel as though you consider them ignorant. People don't like that.

because they who get offended have been taught that theirs in the one and only way and deviants from the norm are NOT to be tolerated or trusted. Also, they know what "dissension" can do, and they fear the fall of what they have built their life around.

Not offended. Praying for you to come to a knowledge of truth: the reality that you need a savior.
It won't change my eternal destiny - but since Christ loved me while I was ignorant, I'm compelled to do the same for you.
