For many people its a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be genetically carried. Only those who are incredibly ignorant would say something like "snap out of it", and expect others to be fine. That's why medications work , its correcting the chemical imbalances in the brain.

Depression can be either one or both.

Often depression accompanies a sudden change, or disappointment in your life, a move, end of a relationship, death of a dream, or grief when someone dies, or loss of a job.

Depression can come from an overload of stress when too many things happen too quickly, and you feel overwhelmed.

Depression can accompany a crisis in your life, and loss of hope. These first three are best treated by Talk-Therapy to help you understand what is happening, and help you to do things differently, or to think of your circumstances in a different light. To assist you to get back toward normal, a few months of antidepressant may be helpful as well as Counseling-Therapy.

And Depression can be a true physical-chemical problem, when your brain stops making what it needs to function properly. -- The "disease" form that requires medication to correct the problem.

It is definately not a mind set! Depression can be a disease and it can also be brought be circumstances. However, true depression can not just be "shaken off" so to speak. If you feel you have depression, you need to see a doctor. However, you may not want to simply take pills. There could be other underlying causes for depression which medicine would only temporarily fix. Mine had to due to a gluten intolerance.

My brother, in his late 30s, was going to medical school, and he had a really bad breakdown and did not get out of bed for 6 months. If you think about it, could you do that? If you think you could do that tomorrow, just go to bed and not get up for 6 months, then depression is just a mind set.

But if you take the time to do a little research, you will discover that depression is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. I thought most people knew that by now.

Would suggest you determine what is depressing you. Then make your decision whether it is self inflicted or from another source. What you allow the mind to do to you is amazingly effective, to attract many negatives. They can come individually or bring all their relatives along for the ride. All at your expense. So would heavily consider why you allow your mind to run into this very deceptive arena of negativity. The more obvious evidence is; it always revolves around you.

Well, I'm going to say that it's NOT a disease, any more than alcoholism is a "disease," which it is NOT, despite what the liberal egghead "experts" say.

I vote for MIND-SET, to use your term. The authorities of this world want to call every failing or aspect of the human condtion a "disease."

I will say, however, that liberalism is a disease, of sorts.

Look, young lady...I believe that you suspect that depression is not a disease also, and this why you're asking the question. Always listen to your intuition as a balance to what worldly "experts" have to say. Those people are best at treating one another after the doors are locked shut after 5 pm.

Oh, I almost forgot. ADHD is not a disease either, but rather mostly a way that the school system blames and drugs the students, rather than admit its own failure.
