Lately I've been feeling extra depressed - and antsy to get back to my habit of SI even though I know it's a horrid thing to do - I haven't done it since about May. Should I go ahead and do it (it's pretty mild actually) or is there something else to make me feel better? The usual tactics said to help are like using a red marker on the skin (but I don't cut) and stuff like that.

I exercise regularly - of course the endorphins help for a little while, but my thoughts return to the other method. And I'm too frightened to go get help at my local Health clinic.

SIB releases beta-endorphins and can become addictive. The most effective therapy for SIB is Dialectical Behavior Therapy which was developed by Marsha Linehan to treat Borderline Personality Disorder. SIB is just one manifestation of BPD, and not all SIB occurs within the context of BPD. One of my clients squeezed ice cubes into water and found that seemed to trigger similar amounts of relief as SIB. Somato-Respiratory Integration developed by Donald Epstein is an alternative (chiropractic) health practice which has some anecdotal success in retraining the brain away from SIB. Both systems seem to train the nervous system to manage and tolerate stress and distress better, and to regulate emotions. Both systems work to change deep emotional pain, DBT from a behavioral-cognitive standpoint, and SRI from a respiratory-neurological standpoint.

I've never tried the red marker thing (I don't cut either I scrap my chest until blood runs). I usually sit in the dark, listen to music and drink that always seem to help for awhile but I always end up doing it sooner or later. Try not to do it though. SI scares people I'm surprised to see this question. Sorry I'm not much help but if you find something let me know.

Please don't harm yourself. You need to find healthy ways to cope when you're feeling sad. Try talking to someone about what's bothering you. It's not good to keep things bottled up inside. What are your hobbies? Try doing something that helps you feel better, it could be listening to your favourite music, going out for a walk, watching TV, ... Symptoms of depression shouldn't be taken lightly. Ask your family physician about counselling services available in your community.

please don't get back to any old habits, if you're depressed now, mostly likely very soon something will come along to change all that, i've been depressed so many times in my life, and it's always so hard, but never give up hope.... i know that people always say that and that when you're depressed it doesn't seem to matter whatsoever, but trust me when i say that most likely something will happen that'll change the way u feel..... and again please don't do anything.....

A healthy thing to do
is to purpose to spend most of your time in the presence of other people. If you are in your room, leave your door open.
AND find an adult to speak of your problems to.

go to the ER and explain how you're feeling. they won't put you away or anything. They'll set you up with a social worker and a psychiatrist.
