It depends on the type of turbulence and where it is. Clear Air Turbulence might throw a plane around but at those altitudes there is plenty of room and the plane won't hit anything. At low levels - landing and take-off - up and down drafts associated with microbursts, mountain waves and rotors can be extremely dangerous because they could force the plane into the ground before the pilot has time to correct it.

The pilots can take a lot more punishment than the passangers and the plane can take more than the pilots. Modern aeroplanes are very strong machines.

By the way, people injured in clear air turbulence are those idiots who think it is beneath them to wear a seat belt. The belt is there to stop you bouncing off the ceiling in turbulence. Keep it fastened when in your seat.
