Depends on the situation. Usually I give mine my complete attention. Turn off T.V. Computer, and listen, or go for a drive with radio off.

I find that the best way is to be a ggod listener, and an encourager during your partner's down times.

By the nostrils.
Just kidding, lol. The best way is to say something positive and true about them, remind them of their good traits. You could also challenge their feeling of doom. Is it really as bad as it seems? Usually, the best and worst outcomes never happen, usually the outcome is somewhere in-between best and worst.

offer the partner BOTH HANDS and carefully help them to their feet. A kind word does not hurt either, and offer any assistance they could reasonably ask for. Your thoughtfulness and kindness will not be forgotten when you are the one that is down.

Sometimes people need to work things out for themselves. If you know your partner well, then you probably know the things they enjoy or gives them pleasure. So try some of those things.

I would say your presence should be enough. if he feels like talking about it you may ask him- how do you feel? what does make you fel like this?
if he does not want to talk than just remain with him and later he will open up.
basically, you can not fix him, force him to be better.. he needs to feel good about himself or the issue himself and that might require time.
If he is up to going out for a walk that can relax his mind....
I wish you both a lots of strength and courage.

Pray, have an open ear, then show them you love them. All, recognizing the Lords guidance through the process.

Be encouraging and comforting. You let them know you're there for them and they can talk to you about anything. One thing that can totally turn someone from sad to happy is talking about it... it's not good to keep your emotions hidden inside.
