yeah a big hit is a great bike, i am actually selling mine on ebay, its got tons of extras. its sweet if you mod it a bit. another good bike in the full suspension cat. around the same price is a coiler.

The newer ones are good bikes. However, i prefer Norco and their dh bikes, such as the Shore, or its older counterpart, the Launch. (the Launch is no longer in production, but is still nice) Also for a relatively less expensive hardtail, maybe think about a Manik.
also check out pinkbike.com for it's buy/sell section, that's where my brother, my dad and i bought ours off of. (you can also list your own bike on there if you want. Mostly a Canadian website though.

yes it is a good bike very good but for free ride and downhill you might want a norco A-line or kona stinky deluxe or primo, they are much better but more expensive yet worth the money
