Actually, the rescue workers were there in under a minute. Not bad, considering the location of the crash vs where the rescue equipment has to stage. As well as 42 other cars screaming around the track.
As far as "standing around doing nothing", protocol is to let the driver unhook himself from his safety devices: there's just not enough room in those cars for anyone to "help" if the driver's capable of doing it himself. By trying to get in there & "help" they'd only be getting in the way.

With Mike being 6 and a half feet tall and 250 pounds he is big to crawl out of the car.
Fire is a concern fo any driver, and by the time you unhook belts and "pop" the steering wheel off it seems like eternity. Then climbing out of the window with a helmet and HANS device also adds to the difficulty.
But this fire looked even worst since it was on the drivers side and also coming thru the shifter boot in the floor of the car.

Thats what really scared me, Michael not being able to get out of the car! When we see wrecks like that and the car is on fire the driver usually gets out right away, but Michael couldn't and that was scary! I'm glad that he is ok!!!

Michael Waltrip is a big guy and I can understand how hard it is for him to get out of the vehicle but I do agree that he took a way long time of getting out especially when he put his net down so early in the fire. Denny Hamlin had a tough time getting out of his vehicle a few races ago (I believe)....Even when Jimmie Johnson's car went on fire he wasn't able to hop out right away. There needs to be a faster way for these drivers to get out of their vehicles.

Yes! It scared me. Mikey is a big dude and it takes him sometime to get out of the car. I was literally screaming, "Get the fire" while the rescue workers were standing there looking at it for a minute. . .sigh.

Yes it scared me!
When ever a car catches fire like Mikey's did or when they have a BAD crash like Brad Keslowski I worry about that driver until they are safely out of the car or at least until the window net drops.

The fire itself didn't scare me. What freaked me out was the fact that MW didn't get out of the car right away. THAT was scary.

Yes it did scare me. Mikey is too big to get out that fast alone(he admitted this himself) and the safety workers stood there like a bunch of idiots instead of helping. They waited way to long to start to get the fire out. Fire is always the scariest for every driver involved.

Fire is the most severe incident on any track. It is what the drivers fear the most. What makes me sick about such incidents is how stations like ESPN plays it up afterwards - and will continue to do so - just because the driver was not injured.
