Recently I found an abandoned kitten on the road and decided to take him in. Currently I take him out for play occassionaly but have him in my dog's pet carrier [ quite large ] for most of the day. But recently I've noticed cuts and scarring on his paws and pieces of litter stuck to it. I want to put vaseline on his paws but im afriad he'll lick it. What type of litter do you reccommend I use? How can I treat his paws? What other things can I do?

Well, two alternatives to litter change:

-Strips of Newspaper- No cuts, yet still good box filler. Just get Arm&Hammer Deodorizer....

-Worlds Best Cat Litter(thats the name of the product, look for it)- teeny tiny litter pieces, not sharp at all, and not rocky litter but actually just soft grains, that absorb urine and poop and clump it together into balls, so the cat cannot hurt himself(recommended due to its ability to be flushed down the toilet instead of in the garbage)

Just clean his paws. Its not a HUGE deal unless it happens even after my advice. If the stuff i recommended doesnt work, take him to a vet. They can figure somethin out. But take my advice first on the Worlds Best Cat Litter, it works and its great. Remember, World's Best Cat Litter is the product name :-)

You can put Nolvasan (for animals), or Neosporin, on the cuts. Neither will hurt if it's licked off, and if you keep his paws clean, they should heal pretty quickly. As for his litter pan......until his paws are clean, don't use regular litter. You can find some pelleted paper litter @ Petsmart, or other Pet store, and use that. Or, if you have a paper shredder, shred some newspaper and use that. After his paws are healed, just use any kind of scoopable litter, and keep it clean. Good luck..........

Do not put vaseline on his paws! I would get a litter that is fine like sand. Thats what I use and have not had any problems.

Until he gets a little older, try a pelleted or non-clumping granular litter. In the meantime, cleaning the paws gently with warm water is probably your best bet.

Try using litter with bigger pellets, such as Yesterday's Mews (made of recycled paper), SWheat (processed wheat byproducts) or Feline Pine (pine byproducts)...they don't stick as much as clay litter, which gets soft and sticky when wet.

I wouldn't put anything on his paws. As you said, he will lick it off, and it will also make his paws even stickier. The cuts should heal soon.

vaseline is an extremely poor choice. it is not a disinfectant and it is a grease that will only trap in the infection and dirt. Please take your kittie to the vet for routine shots and an examination. It probably needs to be dewormed and get a flea treatment.

Thank you for caring about an abandoned animal!

i've always used fresh step. i love the stuff and so do my cats. as far as cleaning the paws, do not use vaseline. try using a nail brush (for people).
