This is a nightmare to get rid of - many people suffer for years. There are many liquids and tinctures that you paint on that have minimal effect due to the nature of the fungus. Preparing the site for treatment, i.e clipping sanding etc takes forever.
I got rid of mine by taking Lamasil TABLETS, NOT the cream. You have to get a script for this from your doctor as it can have side effects for some people and it is a little expensive (but it works). It was about a 4 week course (from memory), but cleared it all up and never got it back since, and not embarassed to have bare feet anymore.
Hope this helps.

I suffered from toe fungus on both big toes for 10 years. I tried cure after cure (vicks, antifungal spray, bleach, etc). Nothing worked until I started to soak my feet in apple cider vinegar for long periods of time. For example, I d fill a plastic shoe box with enough ACV to cover my foot and I d let it sit in there while I watched TV. First one foot for an hour, then the other. I did this every 3 days for about 2 months and I noticed that the fungus started to get alot better. It s not completely gone still, but it is 90 percent better than before. I think you really need to let it soak a long time so that the vinegar really infuses your nail. Also, take a file and file your nail thinner so its easier for the ACV to penetrate.

Anything OTC and topical medicine is crap, useless, and a waste of money. Lamisil is the best and will cure it no problem. The only thing is that some people have weak livers and can;t handle Lamisil, The doctor will run tests before and during the treatment.

I've heard several times to smear it with Vicks Vapor Rub. Also, garlic foot baths should be pretty effective.

The oral antifungal medicine is really the best, but if you can't afford it I have heard a LOT of people say if you apply Vick's twice a day for a month it will kill it.

Sean c is correct. Nothing over-the-counter really works well. I believe my treatment took much longer but did work in the end.
