Whenever I do something that I deem socially unacceptable, I'll narrate the action outloud.

For instance, I was rushing to pick up my Aunt for a doctor's appointment, when I saw an old lady waiting to cross the intersection. I knew I should have let her go, but I decided to drive on anyway.

As I did, aloud I said, "Yeah, I should have let the old lady go, but I'm going to be a crappy person today and keep driving".

Why do I do that?

You feel selfconscious. You're using language to excuse yourself. Is it working?

It sounds like you are, in a way, holding yourself accountable for the undesirable behavior by verbalizing it...yet, at the same time, justifying it by verbally acknowledging that "you" don't agree with the behavior but choose to do it anyway. Because you find the behavior unacceptable, or are conditioned to believe that it is unacceptable, you feel that it is your moral responsibility to act accordingly; by making a verbal account of your "rebellion", you are making a statement in more ways than one; you are saying, "I have a choice and this is what I choose."

You know what, I think I do the same thing! Maybe it's to make the situation funny, or to tell other people you are with that you acknowledge the "old lady" or whatever it may be.
I think I do it to be funny, make the situation less "socially unacceptable".

I think cuz you think it justifies the behavior like someone is watching and if you explain your actions you will be fine
