Anyone who would ask such an absurd question is completely ignorant of science.

funny thing about that car . . . it needs not only a designer, but countless other causes and conditions to come into existence. it needs elements that can be caused by humans to turn into metals and rubbers and plastics and so on. it needs humans to think up all the parts, and to assemble them. other humans to transport the parts to the factory, and to build the trucks, tires, and highways that enable THAT to happen. there is an endless spiral of causes and conditions and actions that bring the car into existence - not just the designer. and the same can be said for every single thing we perceive to exist. nothing has inherent existence independent of everything else. gods are no exception. they exist because people say they do, and then create the causes and conditions (stories and mythologies) that give rise to beliefs. the whole mess is constantly being born, getting sick, dieing, and starting over again.

I agree, there is no sense in making up stories, but even if the Christian God does not exist, you can't rule out the possibility of there being some sort of divine force. It's human nature to look up at the sky and say "I wonder who's looking back." Not the nature of a pompous a**hole. If people want to make up stories, let them. You never know, they might be right (probably not, but you never know).

This argument by analogy is, as always, ignorant of the dissimilarities between life and machines.
It is a false analogy because cars don't have progenitors!
If the argument were valid, it could equally be argued that, in every case where a machine's origin can be determined, the machine is made by humans, and therefore all life is man-made.

Honey, did you ever get a good look at the Edsel that came out in 1969? Talk about an undesigned car!...no one takes credit for that one..LOL
On the serious side,,,I don't know is certainly a good answer and I can't imagine a Christian calling you ignorant because you say you don't know...we all started out not knowing about God......every one of us have sinned...so I think you must have misunderstood. And it is totally disrespectful on your part, to call Christians a bad name...a particularly ugly bad name,,,,the way you just did....shame on you! You actually did what you accused the Christians of doing. I would never say something like that about you.

A very good answer!
In my town (technically, village), all I have to do to confuse the "pompous assholes" is to ask who, following this same line of logic, created their Sky Daddy. This usually elicits the typical fundie cop-out of "Gawddidit" or "He's Gawd. He can do that."

1. Design does not require an anthropomorphized designer. Designs appear in clouds, for example, with no more of a designer than uneven heating, evaporation, and other natural causes.
Even an anthropomorphized designer need not be a deity. The atheistic religion of Raelianism, for example, proposes that humans were created by extraterrestrials (Raelian Movement, n.d.).
2. Evolution is a designer. Via variation and selection, it serves to favor reproduction and shape things according to environmental conditions.
3. If the designer does not need a designer to create it, why should other things?

Too many cartoons, not enough Sesame Street? It's not too late to make sense of the world even if it's psycho and schizo. Maybe there's an alien supercomputer out there somewhere?

Would it be accurate to say that you don't deny the existence of God but that you're just not convinced that God exists? Anyhow, that's how I look at it.
