Little Tykes (among others) makes a very small slide/climber combo. If you don't use, say, your dining room often, you can put down the rubber mats that people use on garage and shop floors, then put the slide unit on top of that. The mats protect the floor and your baby's head when he takes his inevitable tumbles. Our two climbers made good use of a set-up like that for months. Even before they could walk.
They get creative, too. A blanket over the top makes it a castle. Poking your head through a porthole means you're traveling to the bottom of the ocean. The slide makes an awesome launching ramp for cars and trucks and things that go. And the top of the slide is a good place to check out a picture book or give your lovey a cuddle.

My son has been climbing for over a month now(he's 14 months) and for his first birthday he received 2 things that I thought would be the least favorite toys for him. A thomas the train fold out couch for little ones and an elmo giggle laughing chair. These are set up in his play room and it is on them that he loves to climb on and off and I have no problem letting him..he thinks he's doing something wrong when he climbs on them but I allow him since they are so close to the ground. He loves to climb on all his upright toys. they sure are full of energy! I give him ample opportunities through out the day to wear off the climbing fascination by having him climb the stairs when he needs changed, nap time, bed time etc and when we are coming from the basement up that's 4 flights of stairs to climb!!!
