Hi. Depending on how small the room is you won't hear the low notes from the Subwoofer because the length of the bass sound waves are longer than the room dimensions.A 20hz note is 56 feet long. If the room can't accommodate half of that wavelength, (28 feet) you will not hear it.A 40hz note is 28 feet long so your room has to be 14 feet long in one direction for you to hear half of that 40 hz note.If your room is shorter than 14 feet in any direction you will not hear below 40 hz which means a Subwoofer is not needed .Even when you hear half a note it is not as clear as a full note .You mainly hear the harmonics of the notes .Also because the sound waves can't develop properly they set up "standing waves"which create areas of loud booming sound and areas of wave cancellation. Also the walls of the room will affect what you hear. If the walls are solid preventing the low notes from penetrating there will be excessive reverberation which will mix with the direct sound from the Subwoofer causing bass notes to dominate the room without decay which will sound terrible .The bass will drown out the sound from the other speakers.

For that kind of usage, I'd consider a netbook. It's a really small and not very powerful laptop that's cheap and has long battery life. They normally don't have cd/dvd drives, and like I said, they're not powerful, but it's enough to surf the web, play music, and watch movies. Just don't expect to be able to play 3D games on it. If you're looking for a low price, I recommend either an MSI wind or an ACER aspire one. If you want a few more features I'd go with an ASUS Eeepc. Some come with windows XP and hard drives, some come with linux and SSD's. Most have 9 or 10 inch screens.

Probably a 10 inch "powered" subwoofer at 100 watts or more...you can get one cheap ($200.00 or less) from ebay or amazon.com. Should be enuff bass for a small room!
